Game of Thrones Season 4: Here's Why Tywin Wasn't Going to Let Tyrion Die

Game of Thrones Season 4: Here's Why Tywin Wasn't Going to Let Tyrion Die

In the Lannister family, the only one who even slightly loves Tyrion is Jaime. His sister Cersei hates him, for this reason revealed only in the books, and Tywin, convinced that the Dwarf was the cause of the death of his late wife, who died in childbirth, has a hard time considering him his son. However, could the patriarch of the Lion clan really have let his offspring die after the sham trial organized the day after the assassination of Joffrey Baratheon?

Tyrion, the ugly duckling of House Lannister

Game of Thrones Season 4: Here's Why Tywin Wasn't Going to Let Tyrion Die

Despised by the vast majority of the inhabitants of King's Landing, including members of his own family, Tyrion has not had an easy life. After the birth of twins Jaime and Cersei, Tywin Lannister's wife (and cousin) Joanna becomes pregnant again. When she gives birth, it is a deformed baby that she will not survive, which, in the fantasy Middle Ages depicted by Game of Thrones, was a common occurrence. But Tyrion is born with two huge thorns in his side that he will never be able to get rid of: he is a Dwarf, far from the standards of beauty that other members of his family meet, and he "murdered" his mother. When Joffrey Baratheon, the King, suffocates and falls dead during a banquet at which his uncle, whom he humiliated, serves him wine, Cersei accuses Tyrion of being the murderer. She finally has the perfect opportunity to make him pay for his "monster" appearance and the death of their mother by having him executed. A nightmarish situation for Tyrion, which will give rise to an anthology trial scene in season 4 of the HBO series.

Tyrion's trial, a charade with an unexpected outcome

Game of Thrones Season 4: Here's Why Tywin Wasn't Going to Let Tyrion Die

As always in the Game of Thrones universe, the series takes liberties with George R.R. Martin's novels, and above all, it does not offer all the explanations contained in the books. However, both the author and the series quickly make clear Tywin's intentions regarding Tyrion, particularly during exchanges with his other son, Jaime. Jaime makes a deal with Tywin to have his brother sent to the Wall, in exchange for which he will agree to marry and produce heirs. But Tyrion does not agree to plead guilty, too humiliated and revolted. It is not known for sure whether the Hand of the King truly believes that the Dwarf is guilty of Joffrey's death, given his tendency to remain as unflappable and reserved as possible. And we'll never know, since Tyrion, who knows his life is in danger, doesn't wait to see what the so-called Justice of King's Landing has in store for him before taking his destiny in hand and calling for a duel.

Would Tywin let Tyrion die?

Game of Thrones Season 4: Here's Why Tywin Wasn't Going to Let Tyrion Die

If Jaime hadn't defended his brother, going so far as to give up his white cloak and his closeness to Cersei to save him, would Tywin have sentenced his son to death? Given his mantra that family comes first, it's hard to believe he would have failed his reputation as a protective patriarch by letting his son end up on the scaffold. It's more likely that the leader of House Lannister had planned from the start to send him to the Wall to take the Black, while being inflexible and ready to let Tyrion die in order to push Jaime to accept the Casterly Rock inheritance in exchange for his brother's life. This clever manipulator had several wins: Jaime would finally give him grandchildren; Tyrion would probably die in the North without blood on his hands; and Cersei would have had the "justice" she was asking for. Add to that the fact that he seemed sincere when Tyrion confronted him, crossbow in hand, and assured him that he had no intention of letting him die.
