Good news or bad news? HBO renews The Last of Us

HBO is treading on eggshells. After a critically and popularly acclaimed first season, the series The Last of Us is finally getting down to business. While creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann can boast of having satisfied fans of the video game series as much as newcomers, it is with this second round of episodes that they will be able to fully convince them. The second game was far from unanimously acclaimed by the public, despite the praise from the press. Some did not appreciate the direction taken by the story, which freed itself from the codes of the first opus.

In a few days, the die will be cast for the widely cited series when it comes to good video game adaptations. Rather faithful to its source material, the first salvo of episodes had already been singled out by some for the liberties taken regarding the characters of Bill and Frank. Episode 3 had divided, between mastery and unnecessary addition. The second season will also have to make choices that could be controversial.

But HBO has confidence in its post-apocalyptic universe and has already made it official the start of work on a third season. In a press release, the executive vice president of HBO programming, welcomes:

For now, the release date of this batch of episodes is not known. We can still hope that The series is maintaining its cruising speed and is offering a date with our screens in 2027. A season every two years, The Last of Us would thus be part of the tradition of recent series that have abandoned annual broadcasts. This early renewal is already the assurance of a start to the process, proving that the American channel has no intention of making its viewers languish more than necessary. But it also confirms the risk taken by the company regarding the adaptation of The Last of Us Part II.

A taster?

When it was released in 2020, on PS4, The Last of Us Part II had a significantly longer lifespan than its predecessor. 24 hours to complete the story compared to 15 previously, Neil Druckmann had a lot more to tell. The choice to divide the events of this title into two seasons is therefore rather understandable, especially in the way that the series to offer itself small suspended moments inspired by DLC, as was the case with the episode inspired by Left Behind. However, it will have to find the right moment for such a shift towards a season 3. It will also have to find a way to delay the inevitable: the end of the heroes' adventures… without pushing the envelope too far.

The Last of Us will not be able to rely on a third video game opus, since Naughty Dog has not yet decided to offer a sequel to the project. Neil Druckmann's participation is still reassuring, it will allow this adaptation to fit in with its universe and its approach. In the meantime, the date is already set with The Last of Us season 2 starting April 14th on Max. The first episode will be offered on this date. Seven chapters are promised, compared to nine for the previous season.
