As Google continues to integrate its AI assistant Gemini into the Android experience, a new option, "Circle Screen", has been spotted in a recent video posted on Instagram.
Video Sneaks A New Gemini Feature
In an official video published by Google on Instagram to tout Gemini's screen sharing capabilities, a keen eye noticed one detail: the “Circle Screen (DF)” option. The acronym "DF," for DogFood, suggests that this is a version reserved for internal testing, used by employees before a possible public deployment.
This feature, not yet announced, would allow you to select a part of the screen using a circular gesture in order to refine a contextual query, similar to what "Circle to search" already does with Google search. But where the latter is directly linked to traditional search, "Circle Screen," which can be translated as "Surround the screen," could give Gemini Assistant a more targeted understanding of the displayed content.
Towards a merger of Circle to Search and Gemini?
Initiated with the Galaxy S24 and Google Pixel 8, the "Circle to Search" function is now present on many high-end smartphones. But Google's Gemini Assistant also has an "Ask a question on this screen" function, which captures the entire screen before formulating an answer. In comparison, "Circle the screen" would go further by only taking into account a specific element that the user would select.
Since this is a bit of a duplication, one might wonder if Google will allow two similar features to coexist, or will it choose to absorb one into the other to unify the user experience? The hypothesis of integrating "Circle to Search" into Gemini is not to be move aside, especially as the boundaries between Google Search and Gemini become increasingly thin.
For now, Google has not publicly commented on this new feature and no users have yet been able to test it. It is therefore possible that this function will never see the light of day… or that it will become one of the future pillars of Gemini.
