Your old photos will soon be able to enjoy a new lease of life. Google, which has been working on an Ultra HDR feature for several months, is indeed about to deploy this new function within the editing tools of Google Photos.
As a reminder, "Ultra HDR allows images to store more information about the intensity of light, which results in more detailed light and dark areas, as well as more intense colors," explains Google on its website. But the good news is that Google will let you convert your old photos to Ultra HDR photos. This means you can give your old photos a new lease on life by reviving their colors and brightness, even after they've been taken.
A button to convert your photos to Ultra HDR
Android Authority, which reported the news, was able to get its hands on screenshots sent by a user on Telegram, showing the availability of this new option in Google Photos. This Ultra HDR feature, accessible from the application's editing tools, would replace the current HDR Effect feature offered in the Adjust section of Google Photos. It would still be possible to adjust the level of application of this Ultra HDR effect using a dedicated slider.
Furthermore, the screenshots provided clearly show the presence of the Ultra HDR label in the detailed information of the modified image. The arrival of such a tool in Google Photos is rather good news since it will allow you to enhance any photo by converting it to Ultra HDR. This is provided, however, that you have a device with a screen that supports this format. Otherwise, the base image, in SDR, will be displayed, the Ultra HDR format having the particularity to combine both HDR and SDR versions of the same image into a single file.
