Adding your payment cards, loyalty cards, passports, or transport tickets has become child's play with Google Wallet. But the application will soon go further by allowing you to add your payment cards without having to manually enter or scan them.
Add a payment card to Google Wallet using NFC
In the latest beta version of Google Play Services (25.16.33), lines of code suggest an interesting evolution of Google Wallet. The application is preparing a method for adding cards based on NFC technology. The principle is simple: simply hold your bank card near the back of your phone and it will automatically retrieve its main information, such as the number and expiration date. Here is the code in question:
The process, which will be added to the current methods of manual entry and scanning with the camera, will be reserved for devices equipped with NFC technology, present on the majority of recent smartphones. The phone will vibrate to signal that the card has been detected. Only the visual cryptogram (CVV) could still require manual entry.
A feature that already exists at Apple
A welcome new feature, but not entirely new. Indeed, Apple Wallet has already offered a similar function since iOS 18. As is often the case, Google's rollout of this feature could be gradual and vary depending on the different regions of the world in which Google Wallet is used.
At this time, no specific date has been communicated regarding the availability of this feature. It is therefore likely that only certain privileged users will be able to benefit from it initially, through certain beta programs or phased updates. A promising feature that we are eager to test and which promises to remove friction when adding new cards.
