Has Apple abandoned the idea of developing Apple Maps? It's clear that the manufacturer is in no rush to improve its service. This is evidenced by the latest update. app update.

Has Apple given up on Maps? The latest update is really… we'll let you be the judge

For several years now, Apple has been trying as best it can to make Maps a viable alternative to Google Maps… without ever really succeeding. It must be said that Google's mapping app enjoys a considerable lead in the field, and unless colossal resources are invested, it will be difficult to catch up.

In 2023, Apple has tried to do so by taking the best features of Maps, such as directions for cyclists, voice guidance from an Apple Watch, and immersive view. But there is one point on which Apple Maps is still lagging behind, and that is Detailed City Exploration, the feature that allows you to display the world's major cities in 3D.

For now, and according to the brand's official website Apple, only 27 cities are compatible with this feature. That's not a lot, especially considering that Detailed City Exploration was first unveiled in 2022 at WWDC.

Has Apple given up on its Maps app?

A very slow pace of updates, therefore, which doesn't help Apple turn users away from Maps. As reported by our colleagues at PhoneArena, the Cupertino company has just quietly added Stockholm to the list of compatible cities. Strangely, Apple has made no announcement on the subject, and the Swedish capital is still not among the supported cities on its official website.

Even more incongruously, previous leaks have suggested that the next city on the list would be Italian. From the outset, Rome seemed like the ideal candidate. As a result, we come to: wonder if Apple has truly established a strategy to develop this feature, which is essential to keep up with Maps. The manufacturer's silence regarding its plans for Maps also speaks volumes. The last official press release dedicated to Maps was dated September 16, 2024, and nothing since.

As further proof of Apple's difficulties with Maps, the American company launched a rather special app in the United States last March. Called Maps Surveyor, it allows users to help Apple improve the accuracy of the mapping service... and, above all, to update Update outdated information. It's also worth remembering that since the rollout of iOS 18.4, you can now choose Google Maps as the default navigation app on your iPhone. Combined with the lack of new features and recurring problems with Maps, it's hard to see how the app could still stand out from the crowd. What's your opinion on the matter?
