Hela is our next favorite co-op game

Hela is our next favorite co-op game

If you love (or love) local co-op games, don't miss the release of Hela. Unveiled a few months ago, the independent title from Windup studio has a 2025 release window on Xbox and PC. Forget Split Fiction, this is going to be the best co-op game of the year for one simple reason.

Hela offers you non-linear gameplay (i.e., completely free), not only in the way you approach the story, but also in how you explore the open world. Solo or with others, it is possible to You can do just about anything in the game world, inspired by the Swedish countryside. The developers encourage creativity and experimentation, as there are many ways to enjoy it.

Unravelian Inspirations

The studio takes its experience with the Unravel series and transposes it into this enchanting universe filled with possibilities, making it even more engaging. Some of the mechanics that define Unravel can be found in Hela thanks to the frog backpack that allows players to do a lot of things. Hanging on, pulling, building a bridge, or even grabbing, some solutions to environmental puzzles require imagination and sometimes a little help. The developers explain:

While it is possible to play co-op up to 4 players online, it is also possible to invite a friend to your couch to play split screen. Finally, the entire game can be played alone thanks to a cloning system that allows you to simulate the presence of several people. Its story is also charming in its aesthetics, because the mice must actually find a cure for the region's witch who watches over its inhabitants with her powerful magic.

Unlike many of its fellow members of the ID@Xbox program, Hela will not be offered Day 1 on Game Pass. This is rarely the case with co-op games that can bring in more money than a classic single-player game. We're still waiting for a definitive release date for this game that we already love.
