Here are the most used chatbots in France and around the world (and there are some surprises)

Symbols of the explosion of generative AI, chatbots have become essential for many Internet users. The highly competitive sector experienced significant upheavals in March 2025, according to a data analysis conducted by the AI tools directory aitools.xyz. While one giant seems untouchable at the global level, the battle rages for the places of honor, and the French market, for its part, does not hesitate to shake up the established order! Prepare yourself, because the global ranking does not tell the whole story.

The undeniable leader ChatGPT and the surprising Grok

On a global scale, ChatGPT retains its crown as the undisputed leader. With an astronomical 5.6 billion monthly visits and continued growth (+400 million over the month), it has captured more than 80% of the global market. This dominance leaves little room for direct competition. Yet, behind this colossus, the market is bubbling, and the current sensation is undoubtedly Grok. The chatbot developed by xAI, at the initiative of Elon Musk, has seen its use explode spectacularly (+193% visits in one month!). Notably, it stands out for its stronger adoption among women, who represent 61% of its users, compared to 39% of men.

Conversely, the Chinese AI DeepSeek, although still number two worldwide in terms of volume (647 million visits), is going through a period of turbulence with a significant erosion of its traffic (-18%).

The battle rages to reach the podium

Behind this top three, the ranking reveals varied dynamics. Gemini, Google's tool, shows modest growth of 14.9 million visits (+10.69%), reaching 154.30 million. It stands out for its very balanced user base (51% men, 49% women), but remains far behind the meteoric growth of Grok. In fifth place, Claude recorded an increase of 17 million visits (+15.19%), totaling 128.90 million. Its user base is overwhelmingly male (77%).

Microsoft Copilot is experiencing similar growth (+15.57% and 15.4 million visits), reaching 114.30 million. With a balanced gender distribution (54% women, 46% men) and 1.64% market share, it remains a notable player but keeps a good distance from the leaders.
Further down the ranking, DeepAI (39.50 million visits, -400,000 over the month), Chat Blackbox (26.30 million visits, +2.5 million over the month), Monica (20.20 million visits, +1.9 million over the month) and Meta AI (12.20 million visits, -100,000 over the month) occupy more modest market shares (between 0.57% and 0.18%), with variable growth and diverse user profiles. DeepAI and Monica attract slightly more women, while Chat Blackbox and Meta AI lean towards a male audience.

The almost French exception

And in France? The ranking presents notable particularities with ChatGPT not only leading, but with a dominance that borders on hegemony. OpenAI's chatbot captures nearly 90% of the French market with more than 125 million monthly visits. This overwhelming dominance relegates its pursuers far behind. DeepSeek, for example, is struggling to convince: although second, its market share is tiny (barely 4%) and its traffic is also crumbling (-13%).

But it is especially in the chasing pack that France stands out. One trio seems to be particularly favored by French users: Microsoft Copilot climbs to the third step of the national podium (compared to 6th place worldwide), while Claude (4th) and Gemini (5th) also display flattering rankings and impressive growth rates in the territory (from +27% to more than +40%). Their adoption seems faster and more marked in France than elsewhere.

As for Grok, the X platform tool is only sixth in France with 1.54 million visits. However, it shows the highest monthly growth rate in the French top 10 (+285.37%). Monica (sixth) and DeepAI (seventh) also appear in this ranking, with less spectacular performances. Finally, the conversational search engine You.com invites itself to ninth place (135,880 visits, 84.29%) and Chat Blackbox closes the French ranking with 92,050 visits (20.86%).

While no one is contesting ChatGPT's throne, the competition for the next places is taking on a particular flavor in France as in the rest of the world. The game is far from over, and the coming months promise many more twists and turns in this sector.
