Adapting a video game, whether into a film or a series, is always a major challenge. After years of flops of all kinds, producers seem to have hit the nail on the head. The Last of Us is one of the best adaptations offered to date. Despite the resounding success of its first season, season 2 has enormous pressure on its shoulders. It must be said that the game The Last of Us Part II is one of the most acclaimed for its storytelling and twists. This is the challenge of the next episodes, which will arrive on Max starting April 13.
Because adapting a video game means pleasing viewers, but also an audience of gamers who are increasingly demanding about the quality and fidelity of the programs. This is why there are several key moments that the series cannot afford to miss. If you don't want to be spoiled, we advise you to stop reading here and check out our other articles on The Last of Us.
Ellie's Birthday
The second game in the franchise offers us some touching flashbacks. This is the case with Ellie's birthday at the Natural History Museum. Joel takes the teenager there to surprise her, which gives us a particularly emotional moment when Ellie discovers the dinosaur skeletons and imagines herself as an astronaut. While it doesn't have much narrative significance, it's thought to be one of those scenes that adds life to the post-apocalyptic world.
The kiss between Dina and Ellie
Just as HBO couldn't miss Ellie's homosexuality announcement in season 1, Season 2 can't miss the very first kiss between the young woman and Dina at Jackson's ball. This moment is also teased in the latest trailer for the series, with a lot of visual similarities between the production and the video game.
The argument between Joel and Ellie
There are some flashbacks that aren't pleasant. But it's impossible for HBO to explain the whole point of Season 2 without first showing us the source of disagreement between Joel and Ellie. A few years before the current events, the adoptive father revealed the truth to his daughter about her rescue and the fate that Joel reserved for the Fireflies, who hoped to find a cure for Ellie's immunity... for her life.
Joel's death
We know that season 2 of The Last of Us will be delayed this moment as much as she can, but Joel's death is absolutely inevitable. As endearing as he may be, and popular with viewers, Pedro Pascal's character has no choice but to perish to set up the entire narrative for the second game. Some rumors claim that it won't happen until the end of the season, but we think it's much more appropriate for this event to occur as early in the series as it does in the video games, or at least mid-season.
The Guitar Tracks
One of the important components of the game are the guitar sessions. While they may not be easy to play, they will be much more enjoyable to watch. This is one of the few bonds that unites Ellie and Joel throughout her quest for revenge, since it was he who taught the young girl to play the instrument.
The Hospital
Between Joel's death and the end of the story, there are many twists and turns that the writers can rewrite and rework. But there is one scene in particular that we think is essential. It's the moment in the hospital where Ellie fights with Nora, a friend of Abby's. We should rather say that she "beats Nora" since the young woman literally attacks her, showing us a side of her that was previously unknown. This is the moment when the viewer will be able to understand and see the hatred that drives Ellie, to the point of distorting her face, but also the moment in the game where the player has no choice but to "validate" the character's violence.
Shut up with Dina?
Seasons 3 and 4 of The Last of Us have already been signed by HBO. But there are some rumors that the plot of The Last of Us Part II will be told in this season 2 as well as the next one, leaving the 4th and beyond for the potential upcoming third game. We can therefore expect the episodes to end more or less at the level of the scene at the farm, where Ellie, Dina and her baby live peacefully before Joel's daughter decides once again to satisfy her revenge by hunting down Abby. The heartbreaking goodbyes between the two lovers are a necessary part of the plot.
