Is your Pixel 7a battery swelling? Google can repair the smartphone or provide compensation

Google has implemented an "extended repair program" for the Pixel 7a. The cause: the battery of some Pixel 7a devices may swell unexpectedly (these components are not supposed to swell!). This can cause the smartphone to break and other less visible, but equally serious, problems such as component perforation or internal short circuits.

Swelling Battery

So be careful, not all Pixel 7a devices are affected. Google lists several symptoms: visible swelling of the device, bulging front of the smartphone, or even suddenly reduced battery life. The company has posted this page to check if an iPhone 7a is eligible for the program.

If so, the device is eligible for a free battery replacement... but only in certain countries: the United States, India, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and Singapore. France is therefore not part of it, just like the rest of the European Economic Area.

Users whose Pixel 7a is eligible but cannot get to a repair center, or if there is simply no repair center available, Google is offering financial compensation. For an out-of-warranty model, the company will pay $200 (approximately €175) or a $300 (€264) discount code valid for the purchase of a Pixel smartphone on the Google Store. If the Pixel 7a is still under warranty, the payment is $456 (approximately €400).

In both cases, you'll either have to recycle the defective Pixel 7a or have it repaired, but it's unthinkable to continue using a smartphone with a swollen battery. It's also important to know that replacing the battery doesn't extend the device's standard warranty coverage.

Google isn't having a good time with its smartphone batteries. Earlier this year, the manufacturer delivered an update for the Pixel 4a, which must be installed, and which limits the component's capacity and therefore its battery life... for the "good" Cause: The battery of this model is indeed likely to catch fire and possibly cause a disaster.
