Keanu Reeves: 5 Things That Make The Matrix Star Awesome

Keanu Reeves: 5 Things That Make The Matrix Star Awesome

Keanu Reeves, this great loner, did not have an easy childhood, and his generosity and sympathy towards his fellow man are all the more admirable. His youth resembles a chapter from Les Misérables: he was abandoned by his father at the age of 3; he was dyslexic; his hockey career was cut short by a serious accident; he moved countless times and was unable to attend school normally... As an adult, this dark streak continued: his daughter with Jennifer Syme died at birth, and she died some time later, at the age of 28, in a car accident. Add to this the fact that his childhood best friend, River Phoenix, died of an overdose in 1993, and his sister spent ten years of her life battling leukemia. Yet Keanu Reeves hasn't let his complicated life get in the way of his personality: he's a great guy, kindly responding to his fans even after a rather tiring international flight... Proof by 5.

#1 He "crammed" himself into a wedding

The guests on the happiest day of Nikki and James Roadnight's life couldn't believe their eyes when Keanu Reeves showed up unexpectedly... The actor, recounted the married at the Guardian in 2023, was staying at the same hotel as the couple. Knowing this, James came to him at the restaurant where he was having lunch and invited him to the ceremony:

[He] explained that we had just gotten married and invited him to come and say hello if he wanted - he said I was the one wearing the big white dress, hard to miss, which made Keanu laugh.

Nikki paints a glowing picture of the actor, describing him as down-to-earth, "relaxed and down to earth", chatting with guests and taking pictures. He stayed for a while before slipping away, leaving the bride and groom to enjoy the rest of the evening...

#2 He gives a lot (and he doesn't brag about it)

Keanu Reeves doesn't need to post 17 stories on Instagram to explain to the world how generous he is. The majority of his donations are made anonymously (but you know journalists, they always manage to uncover the truth!), however, we do know some of it. According to the website LAD Bible, he donated 70% of his earnings from The Matrix (1999)to cancer research, or $31.5 million (he received $10 million before the film's release, and $35 million after its massive theatrical success). The actor is particularly affected by this disease: his sister Kim battled blood cancer between 1991 and 2001. In 2009, he told Ladies Home Journal:

I have a private foundation that's been around for five or six years, and it helps a few children's hospitals and cancer research. I don't like to put my name on it; I just let the foundation do what it does.

#3 He has compassion for the disadvantaged

In September 1997, journalists reported that Keanu Reeves, now worth tens of millions of dollars, spent a morning in West Hollywood with a homeless man. The two men are photographed chatting and sharing food and drinks. Sure, giving a coin or a sandwich to a homeless person is common, but stopping for a long chat, especially when you're someone you know, is much less so.

#4 He won't let you lose your house

During the filming of The Lake House, released in 2006, Keanu Reeves overheard two costume assistants talking to each other: the first, in tears, explained to his friend that he would lose his house if he didn't immediately pay his $20,000 debt. Without further ado, the Canadian star, moved by this conversation, to which he wasn't supposed to have access, deposited the sum into his bank account the same day.

#5 He has the art of the honest and sensitive punchline

We are all stardust, baby.

I has always been my hope to be a part of works of art that entertain and that people can come away with something more or positive as they walked out of the darkness into the world. href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/keanureeves?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#keanureeves
