Just over 1 in 8 Europeans (15% to be precise) uses a second-hand or refurbished smartphone, according to the 2025 Barometer of the second-hand mobile market carried out by Recommerce and Kantar. The best student is none other than France, with an ownership rate of 22%. The French do better than the Germans (17%), the Belgians, the Dutch, and the Hungarians (15%). Of the 13 countries surveyed, Italy brings up the rear with just 10%.
Europe embraces second-hand smartphones
It is, of course, price that motivates the purchase of a second-hand smartphone: it is the primary criterion in Europe (68%) and even more so in France (72%). The Barometer nevertheless notes that environmental considerations are gaining weight: 42% of Spaniards, 39% of Portuguese, and 38% of Germans say they want to encourage the reuse of devices. The European average stands at 35%, France is just above, at 36%.
The French are happy to buy and use a second-hand smartphone. But they are less likely than elsewhere in Europe to resell an old phone: 32% say they have done this, which is less than the European average (33%). 44% of Dutch people and 43% of Germans say they have resold their old smartphone. The Portuguese bring up the rear with 22%, however, when reselling, they prefer to simply give their mobile to a loved one. 20% of them have already made over the last twelve months, compared to 13% for the French - this is also the European average.
Second-hand sales platforms and refurbishers have a bright future ahead of them: 36% of Europeans intend to resell their old smartphone! The figure is higher in France (37%), as well as in Germany (41%). But in this area, it is in Switzerland and the Netherlands that the intention to resell is highest: 53% and 51% respectively.
