Lenovo Legion Go S: The Steamos version already reserves a unpleasant surprise

At CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Lenovo caused a stir by unveiling the Legion Go S, the first third-party console to run SteamOS, the operating system for the Steam Deck. Valve hopes to compete with Windows on these portable machines. The Legion Go S will launch in the United States on May 25, 2025, but its price has been revised upwards even before its release.

Initially announced with a starting price of $499 for the version with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, the base model will ultimately cost $549.99. This represents a $50 increase and brings its price in line with that of the Steam Deck OLED.

Why is Lenovo adjusting the Legion Go S price before its release?

While pre-orders have started across the Atlantic at BestBuy (for a release scheduled for May 25), Lenovo has not provided an official explanation for this increase. However, it is likely that the goal is to position itself directly against the Steam Deck OLED ($549), while the LCD model is priced at $399.

At $499, the Legion Go under SteamOS was the link between the Steam Decks. The Chinese giant's console has interesting features, such as its 8-inch OLED screen with variable refresh rate, its Hall effect joysticks and its adjustable triggers. However, the feedback on its Ryzen Z2 Go chip does not necessarily encourage optimism.

It doesn't exactly impress in the Windows version of the Legion Go S, but Microsoft's operating system doesn't necessarily have a good reputation on portable machines. The optimization offered by SteamOS could improve these results, but this remains to be confirmed. At $549, the Lenovo Legion Go S will therefore have to be wary of the competition as Valve plans to bring SteamOS to other consoles. Asus' ROG Ally is expected to support the operating system that made Steam Decks so popular.

The price in euros is not yet officially known

The Lenovo Legion Go S running SteamOS starts at $549.99 in the United States (AMD Ryzen Z2 Go processor, 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage). Its price rises to $749.99 for the "premium" version with an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage.

For comparison, the same console with Windows is listed at $729.99 with 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. A more affordable version is also expected to arrive in May, priced at $599.99 (16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage). Lenovo has not yet confirmed the price in euros for the SteamOS version, while the Windows variant starts at €629.
