The Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled for release on June 5, 2025, brings significant improvements in storage and performance. However, it's important to note that this new console will only be compatible with microSD Express cards, making the traditional microSD cards used with the first generation of Switches obsolete.
Why do you need a special microSD card for the Nintendo Switch 2?
microSD Express cards offer significantly faster transfer speeds thanks to the use of a PCIe 3.0 or 4.0 lane, bringing them closer to the performance of NVMe SSDs. This speed increase is essential for handling larger games and taking full advantage of the Switch 2's capabilities, including 120 Hz and 4K TV-out support.
However, this recent technology comes at a higher cost. Currently, only a few companies, such as SanDisk, Samsung, and Lexar, produce these cards.
In short, to fully exploit the capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2, it will be necessary to invest in a microSD Express card. Although it represents an additional cost, the speed and performance benefits justify the investment for an optimal gaming experience.
Lexar Play Pro microSDXC Express Card
The Lexar Play Pro microSDXC Express is the perfect solution for those looking for a high-performance memory card that can handle demanding games on next-gen handheld consoles like the recently announced Nintendo Switch 2.
Ultra High Speed
The Lexar Play Pro microSDXC Express boasts impressive read and write speeds, unsurprisingly outperforming traditional microSD cards. With read speeds of up to 900MB/s, it dramatically reduces game loading times. For those who don't play, it also has many advantages when you want to manipulate or view 4K video files, for example.
When downloading games, it will also prove very useful since it offers a write speed of 600 MB/s.
Very well protected
The Lexar Play Pro microSDXC Express card will be difficult to break and is able to keep your data safe in many circumstances. It is resistant to wear and tear in the event of intense handling thanks to the use of high-quality materials. It is also waterproof (IPX7 standard), it also resists temperature variations with a wide operating range. Shocks are not a problem for it either, nor are vibrations, magnets or even airport X-ray machines.
It is important to know that in addition to its great resistance, it comes with a license for the Lexar Recovery Tool software, which is a very powerful tool for recovering accidentally deleted or formatted files.
Available in 3 different capacities
The Lexar Play Pro microSDXC Express is available in 3 different capacities. Since the new Nintendo Switch 2 is capable of displaying games in 4K, it is likely that games will be rather space-intensive and it is best to equip yourself well from the start. Even though Nintendo has made an effort to provide more storage space than its previous generation console by adding 256GB by default, it will never be enough.
- Lexar Play Pro microSDXC Express 256GB: €99.99
- Lexar Play Pro microSDXC Express 512GB: €159.99
- Lexar Play Pro microSDXC Express 1TB: €259.99
Our opinion on the Lexar Play Pro microSDXC Express
We were able to test the Lexar Play Pro microSDXC Express in its 1TB version and the results are clear: this card seems perfectly suited to the requirements of the Nintendo Switch 2. Obviously, we weren't able to try it in the Switch 2 and finding a reader capable of reaching these transfer speeds is not easy.
We got the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card, an SD Express card reader that was designed to transfer very large video files, to perform some tests. The Lexar Play Pro managed to meet the performance announced by the manufacturer without any problem. We are therefore very eager to receive the Nintendo Switch 2 so that we can insert it and see what happens directly with the console. We will be sure to update this page when the time comes.
