Some anime from the 1970s and 1980s are finding a new lease of life these days, thanks in particular to MAPPA. The studio launched a few years ago into the production of an animated film based on a cult work of Japanese comics. After its release in Japan, this adaptation will soon be released here on Netflix, to the delight of many of you.
MAPPA: a very prolific studio
In Barely 14 years old, MAPPA has become a benchmark studio in Japanese animation. In recent years, the company has acquired numerous successful licenses such as Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Vinland Saga and even Attack on Titan, whose film, recently released in French theaters, has caused quite a stir. MAPPA has not stopped there and has also taken on readapting cult mangas dating back several years.
Last year, MAPPA gave new life to Ranma 1/2. The cult anime from Club Dorothée has been brought up to date, correcting all the problems of pacing and fidelity that affected the productions of the time. It is overall a successful adaptation, the proof being that a season 2 will soon be released on Netflix. The ties between MAPPA and the streaming platform will also strengthen this year with an animated film based on another cult manga, expected at the end of April.
The film The Rose of Versailles soon on Netflix
The Rose of Versailles, or Lady Oscar in our countries, is a cult manga by Riyoko Ikeda. Since 2022, MAPPA has been working on an animated film adaptation of the famous anime. The feature film was finally released in theaters in Japan on January 31. However, no information had yet been given regarding a French release, which is a shame for a work set in France. Well, we recently got an answer with the announcement that it will be released on Netflix on April 30th.
No theatrical release in France is a shame, especially considering the people involved in the project. The Rose of Versailles features Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto, the composers who amazed us with Attack on Titan. We would have liked to hear their melodies in the best possible conditions. It may happen one day, but in the meantime, we can't wait to rediscover this revisited French Revolution.
