Among the new features of this upcoming Mario Kart World, the only first-party launch game for the Nintendo Switch 2, is an impressive lineup of new playable characters. We're taking stock of this list after analyzing the images presented in yesterday's Nintendo Direct, Wednesday, April 2.
Mario Kart World, the new feature that's (very) expensive
24 hours after the thunderous Nintendo Direct dedicated to the Switch 2, future players (or not) only remember two things: the very high price of the console, 469.99 euros, but also and above all the - exorbitant - price of Mario Kart World, the console's launch game (the bundle with the Switch 2 is capped at 509.99 euros) displayed at 79.99 euros for the digital version, and 89.99 for the physical media.
This will be the price to pay to discover the new features of a game sold by the Japanese firm as a much more free title to travel, and whose circuits are linked together by small paths, all built around a large map (hence the name "World"). 24-player races, rail grinding, wall jumping, new game modes, new vehicles, but also new characters, Nintendo is full of new features - expected - eight years after a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which will undoubtedly continue to make resistance.
48 playable characters
As the images revealed, there will be more participants on the starting track, but also in the menus. We had fun dissecting the presentation video and drawing up the list of characters, in the absence of details from Nintendo. If all the characters shown will be selectable before starting a race, Nintendo will have seen big. In addition to the classic Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Peach, Donkey Kong, Bowser, and Toad, players should be able to play with:

Mario Kart World would thus have 48 playable characters. As a reminder, in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe there were 42 (not counting those added in the racing packs). We imagine that Nintendo will also offer new faces as updates and expansions are released, in order to keep the title alive over time. This includes some notable absences, such as Tanuki Mario and Link.
