Marvel: After the Hulkbuster, here's Iron Man's armor to counter Thor

Marvel: After the Hulkbuster, here's Iron Man's armor to counter Thor

One might be tempted to say that Iron Man is nowhere near Thor's strength: after all, the former is a mere mortal, while the latter is the God of Thunder. Yet, time and again in the pages of comics and on screen, Tony Stark has proven that he is capable of standing up to those more powerful than him through the use of his brainpower and technology. While he is usually no match for the heir to Asgard, he has invented a special armor that allows him to withstand... Mjölnir, his famous hammer, which reminds us of the iconic Hulkbuster.

Yes, you read that right, and the name of this armor is quite ambiguous. Indeed, it is an armor specifically designed by the billionaire to resist the assaults of the God of Thunder and his iconic weapon, Mjölnir. Forged by the Dwarves, this hammer was bequeathed by Odin to his son when the latter proved that he deserved it (and for this selfish hothead, it was not easy). Tony Stark has once again proven the extent of his engineering talents by inventing a shell capable of protecting himself from this magical artifact, whose divine power makes ordinary humans tremble. In Iron Man #64 (Mike Grell, Alan Davis), the superhero unveils the Thorbuster, an armor powered by an Asgardian crystal given to him by Thor, and which, by channeling his magic, allows its user to stop Mjölnir in mid-flight and deflect it.

As with the Hulk in Age of Ultron, the creation of the Thorbuster was born out of a need to control the unleashed power of an Avenger. Reinforced by the Odinforce, a massive power boost, the God of Thunder has plunged Earth into chaos, and it is Tony Stark who is asked by the U.S. government to intervene to stem the threat. He then uses the Asgardian crystal that his colleague had previously given him to create an armor capable of controlling him. Irrigated by the Odinforce, the Thorbuster allows its user to turn Thor's attacks against him. This armor proves Tony Stark's incredible adaptability, capable of building armors adapted to his "enemies". But without the Thorbuster or the Hulkbuster, Iron Man would have no chance against the superpowers of Hulk or Thor!
