It was one of the surprises of this first casting announcement. Last week, Marvel Studios released the first 27 names of the titanic cast of Avengers: Doomsday. In addition to some expected returns like Chris Hemsworth and Paul Rudd, the company also revealed that Tom Hiddleston would be in the game. And yes, Loki, now a multiversal god, will play a role in Avengers: Doomsday. But then, what does this unexpected return mean?
Loki and the Multiverse
The end of season 2 of Loki was a real shock for all fans of the Marvel universe. After going back and forth in the multiverse, Loki, with the help of the TVA, became the new God of the Multiverse. He took the place of He Who Remains, aka Kang. After years of seeking the throne of Asgard, Loki finally inherited a completely different trophy, a cursed and isolated throne, that of the multiverse.
Since the end of season 2 of Loki, the God of Lies has been absent. And we were all wondering when the villainous Loki would reappear. Despite multiversal events in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Deadpool & Wolverine, Loki has not intervened. But, according to Marvel Studios, Loki will indeed play a role in Avengers: Doomsday. But what role? And what will be the consequences of his presence in the Russo brothers' film?
The reunion with Thor
Obviously, for the moment, our proposals are hypothetical. We obviously don't know what will literally happen in Avengers: Doomsday. But we do have some ideas.
The first good news is that Avengers: Doomsday should therefore feature the reunion between Thor and Loki. The two Asgardian gods have not crossed paths since the demise of Loki at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. While their relationship had clearly improved over time, Loki had time to reassure his brother:
I assure you, brother, the sun will shine again.
As usual, Loki has found a way to be resurrected again. Even if, technically, it's no longer the same Loki. Thus, Doosmday will allow the two Norwegian heroes to reunite once again. And this time, on the same side.
Loki's Role
In the comics, Dr. Doom reclaims the power of the Beyonder. This is what allows him to reshape reality in his image in Secret Wars. But in the MCU, the Beyonder was never introduced. According to us, and according to many theories flooding the internet, Loki could replace the Beyonder in the two Avengers by the Russo brothers. It is rumored that Dr. Doom could destroy Loki and take his place as God of the Multiverse. But unlike Loki, whose goal is to protect the sacred Timeline, Doom could use these powers to create Battleworld.
Thus, Doom would take Loki's immeasurable powers to rewrite the MCU's time continuum and thus create Battleworld. In the Secret Wars comic, Doom also steals the powers of Molecule Man, capable of rewriting reality. Here again, it is Loki who would replace Molecule Man in the MCU. In Jonathan Hickman's comic, Doom keeps Molecule Man prisoner. Which would imply, if our theory is correct, that Loki would be kept prisoner by Doom, away from the gaze of others. As in the comics where Molecule Man plays an important role in the climax of the story, Loki could therefore intervene at the very end of Avengers: Secret Wars to help Dr. Strange and Reed Richards in their fight against Doom. If, of course, the God of Lies is not destroyed by Doom from the start.
Another option. If Doom gains his powers through another means, he will obviously threaten the balance of the multiverse. Loki could then be a central character in Doomsday and Secret Wars. He could play a leadership role and a major figure in the fight against Doom. With his new role as protector of the Sacred Timeline, he could set off across the multiverse to assemble a team of superheroes capable of countering the immense power of Fatalis.
Thus, two main options emerge. Either Loki will be the leader of the Avengers in the fight against Fatalis. Or he will be quickly killed by Fatalis so that the latter can steal his powers. We'll let you tell us in the comments which story seems more credible to you. We, in any case, hope that Loki will play a central role in the plot, as the character of Tom Hiddleston is a recurring and qualitatively indispensable element of the MCU.
