Nintendo Switch 2: Be very careful if you plan to buy this accessory

Nintendo recently unveiled an accessory that should delight retro gaming fans: a new GameCube controller specially designed for the Nintendo Switch 2. A controller that will accompany the arrival of the first GameCube games on the future console. But beware, one detail quickly caught the attention of players.

A limitation... Put this Nintendo Switch 2 accessory into perspective?

Officially, this new GameCube pad would only be compatible with retro games from the "Nintendo GameCube: Nintendo Classics" collection on Nintendo Switch 2. This information was confirmed in a presentation video and clarified in small text at the end of the video. On paper, this restriction may seem disappointing. But Nintendo console regulars know that this kind of precision is not necessarily set in stone.

In the past, other retro controllers marketed by Nintendo were announced as compatible only with the corresponding games via the Switch Online service. However, in reality, they also worked with other games. Within the limits of technical constraints, of course (number of buttons, sticks, etc.).

The case of this new GameCube controller could therefore follow the same path. Technically, it should be able to be recognized as a Pro Controller on some Switch 2 games. All of this does not require clicking on the sticks, a function absent on the original model.

Three GameCube games available at launch

Nintendo has confirmed that GameCube games would arrive as soon as the Nintendo Switch 2 launches, scheduled for June 5, 2025. The first three titles announced are anticipated classics:

  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
  • SoulCalibur 2
  • F-Zero GX

These games will benefit from visual improvements, customizable controls, and even an online multiplayer mode. One last important detail: this GameCube controller will not be sold freely in stores. It will be reserved for Nintendo Switch Online members, and only available for pre-order for Nintendo Switch 2 buyers on the official My Nintendo Store. A choice that reinforces its side "collector's item," but which also risks limiting its accessibility.
