It's been a frenzy since the Nintendo Switch 2 was announced. The console went from the most anticipated to the most controversial in less than an hour. Following Nintendo's presentation, many points remain to be clarified about the machine, which promises to be just as enticing as the original version, but at a much higher price. While information is trickling in, Nvidia revealed today that the Nintendo Switch 2 is 10 times more graphically powerful than the current Nintendo Switch.
In its press release, the company explains that the console is equipped with a custom processor including a GPU with RT Cores and Tensor Cores, all manufactured by the brand. We knew that the Nintendo Switch 2 would allow gaming in up to 4K in TV mode, and up to 120 frames per second at 1080p in portable mode. But Nvidia confirms that with its chips, the console will have “10 times better graphics performance than the Nintendo Switch” and will offer “smoother gameplay and sharper images“.
On paper, it sounds like a dream. But in practice, few details can attest to this supposed improvement. It is unclear to what extent DLSS and ray tracing support will be implemented and used by the console and its games. The answer will surely come to us by June 5th.
Nintendo Switch 2 price questioned
Why is this information important in the immediate situation? The Nintendo Switch 2 is at the heart of a controversy regarding its high price – between 470 and 510 euros for pre-order – and the lack of information on its power. We know that the price of a console is generally set by its components, the technologies it incorporates, and the performance it promises. This is the case for PlayStation and Xbox consoles at a minimum, which are practically sold at a loss due to their high manufacturing costs.
As for the Nintendo Switch 2, we can't say that it is the embodiment of the term "innovation". We can see a definite increase in power, particularly in terms of the screen, but nothing in the manufacturer's presentation suggests that it will be a performance monster. Most of the big games and even the screen sharing functionality were subject to an extremely poor frame rate, and absolutely no information regarding the CPU/GPU or other technical components had been revealed.
The price of the Nintendo Switch 2 then had difficulty justifying itself from the technological point of view. This is why we must above all look at the user experience. If the console does not sell us its power, it then sells us a use so specific and so characteristic that the purchase justifies itself. This reason will not convince all players, and rightly so.
