This Tuesday, April 2, 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo Direct was held. A disappointing Direct given the announcements, with a Nintendo Switch 2 with pleasant new features but too many problems. It must be said that the many insiders' comments suggested a legendary Direct, but it's quite the opposite. A Nintendo Switch 2 that comes out several years late, like its predecessor in the end.
A disappointing Nintendo Direct
Nintendo seems to be addicted to being late. Like the Nintendo Switch in its day, the Nintendo Switch 2 ultimately only offers necessary new features, without revolutionizing anything. From the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera to the questionable resolution to the excessive price of the Nintendo Switch 2 and games, it's hard to fall under the spell of Nintendo's announcements. Especially since the publisher didn't improve its conference with the presentation of upcoming games.
Between a Mario Kart World that looks like a Mario Kart Tour console, a Pokémon Legends: Z-A that's smoother but not more beautiful, and a cruel lack of first-party games at launch, this conference is not reassuring. And to find out the price, we had to go to the official website, Nintendo probably not wanting not end his Direct on such a salty note. In short, here are our 4 biggest disappointments from this Nintendo Direct.
#4 The price of the Nintendo Switch 2
€469.99 on its own and €509.99 with Mario Kart World, the Nintendo Switch 2 is a far cry from the €299 offered by distributors for the original Nintendo Switch. Announced at €329, the Nintendo Switch presented itself as a pleasant quality/price ratio. With the Nintendo Switch 2, this is no longer the case. An overpriced console, it was hard to imagine Nintendo breaking the symbolic barrier of €400. However, it has done so, and well. Of course, we imagine that the price will not prevent the console from selling. Nintendo is used to selling products at inflated prices, its fans not looking at the expense. It remains to be seen whether the current climate will dampen Nintendo's enthusiasm.
#3 The Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Catalog
As for its launch catalog, the Nintendo Switch 2 will ultimately only be able to count on Mario Kart World. Donkey Kong Bananza will only be released a month later, while Kirby Air Riders has only revealed a mysterious 2025 release window. The launch catalog will therefore consist of Nintendo Switch backward compatible games and a new Mario Kart. And for a console that has been eagerly awaited for years, that's disappointing. After all, Big N's competitors aren't doing much better with their respective console launches, so it's hard to blame Nintendo. It's also worth remembering that the Nintendo Switch launched with a launch catalog consisting of 1-2-Switch, Just Dance 2017, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Skylanders: Imaginators, and Super Bomberman R.
#1 The price of Mario Kart World and Nintendo Switch 2 games
Nintendo didn't boast about it during its Nintendo Direct, but in addition to the price of the Nintendo Switch 2, the price of the games has also been revised upwards. So, Mario Kart World is announced at €79.99 digitally and €89.99 physically, while Donkey Kong Bananza is available at €69.99 digitally and €79.99 physically. The trend has started and Nintendo is leading the way. It's easy to imagine other publishers following suit and offering their games at €89.99.
#1 Disappointing graphics
4K/60 FPS games in docked form, an announcement that Nintendo Switch players must have welcomed with open arms. "FINALLY!" some will shout, with a supercharged dock for more enjoyable sessions than ever. However, it's hard to fall under the spell of the first images of Nintendo Switch 2 games. Sure, it's fluid. But still, it's ugly. Pokémon Legends: Z-A isn't any more beautiful on Nintendo Switch 2, while The Duskbloods doesn't reinvent the wheel despite being a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. We hope that the studios were caught off guard by this launch, and that the console's power will be better exploited by future productions. At the moment, it's light. Too light.
