Notion Mail: The AI-powered Gmail alternative is finally available

Last fall, Notion announced the arrival of its own email application. Simply named Notion Mail, this email client promised to reinvent the world of email by allowing Internet users to configure their inbox as they wish. Initially, Notion Mail was only available through a waiting list.

A few months after the announcement, Notion's Gmail alternative is now available to all Internet users. As Notion Labs Inc. explains in a press release: release, “Users can get started today by connecting their Gmail account to Notion Mail in just a few clicks”.

How Notion Mail “Changes the Rules of the Game”

To attract Gmail's 2.5 billion users, Notion relies on artificial intelligence. The startup has already used generative AI to boost its flagship productivity app, Notion. Integrated into the platform, Notion AI is able to help its users write, summarize, or organize their notes. Along the same lines, the AI integrated into Notion Mail will assist Internet users in their daily tasks.

Concretely, Notion Mail automatically sorts and organizes your emails according to their priority level, a bit like an intelligent messaging system like Spark. The messaging system allows you to organize your mailbox by splitting it into "personalized views". This approach allows you to highlight "items that require your attention" and classify them "by subject, urgency, sender, or any other criteria." Notion focuses on its modular and infinitely customizable approach, which has made its productivity platform a success.

As soon as you create your account, you'll notice that Notion Mail has categorized your emails to help you navigate them. You can design your own categories manually or by asking the AI for help. For our part, we created categories dedicated to our most common contacts.

A true ecosystem

Unsurprisingly, Notion Mail works in synergy with Notion Calendar, the alternative to Google Calendar. This synergy allows you to manage your appointments and messages in the same place, without having to juggle between several tools. For example, you can respond to an email while checking your availability. Notion also offers useful shortcuts for faster writing, such as templates or email excerpts that can be inserted with one click.

Finally, AI assists the user in writing their emails by "integrating contextual elements from your Notion documents". Here again, the email client benefits from its integration with other services in the startup's ecosystem. In terms of design, Notion Mail uses the codes of other Notion services. It features a clean interface, with a series of commands very similar to those of the Notion platform. If you're a Notion user, you should find your way around without too much trouble.

Available on macOS

Notion Mail is currently available on macOS. An iOS and Windows version are currently under development. For the moment, the tool is exclusively available in English, but German and French will be added in the coming months. AI services can be tested for free within the mailbox as part of a trial period. For unlimited use, you will need to subscribe. To take full advantage of Notion AI, you must opt for a paid subscription of $10 per member per month. The AI also integrates into Notion's other tools, including the main application.
