Chapter 1146 of One Piece allowed us to see that Gunko can regenerate. This suggests that the Divine Knights possess the same ability as the Gorosei. However, this power remains a mystery. This is where a One Piece fan steps in by sharing a very interesting theory about this ability.
The secret of the Gorosei's regeneration revealed by this theory
Regeneration represents a real thorn in the side for our heroes, as it concerns their greatest enemies. There must therefore be a weak point in this power, and Buzzek on Reddit, think I found it. According to him, the power of regeneration—which differs from immortality, as the Divine Knights age, unlike the Five Elders—of the Gorosei and the Divine Knights is linked to the Abyss. The latter is a magic circle that allows its user to teleport from one place to another and even summon people, as was recently reviewed with Sommers and Killingham. According to this theory, what passes through the portal would be an avatar and not the person's true body, which would make this projection invulnerable. If this hypothesis proves correct, then the weak point of this ability would be obvious: the Abyss itself.
To end the regeneration, it would therefore be enough to erase the portal or move its user away from its range. Two examples could support this theory: the first is that Saturn went to Egghead by boat to summon his colleagues, but a surprising detail is that he also teleported to the island when he didn't need to; the second is that when Luffy sent Mars flying to Egghead, he returned to Mary Geoise, his original location. Although this theory is very convincing, it does have one flaw.
One Piece: The Case of Gunko
Buzzek's theory is essentially based on the fact that all Divine Knights could regenerate, except that at the moment we know absolutely nothing about it. At present, only Gunko has shown us this ability. She is a mysterious character, about whom we know almost nothing, except that she is very enigmatic. She is very different from her acolytes and, when she speaks, she gives the impression of holding a lot of information. In chapter 1146, she is particularly talkative, and makes a very interesting remark. When Jinbei calls her "human," Gunko reacts negatively to this label. Another strange detail in this scene is that she's hiding her right eye.
Gunko's appearance is unusual, especially with the bandages she uses thanks to the Aro Aro no Mi. However, the most intriguing element remains her right eye. Eiichiro Oda rarely shows it, which suggests that it's very important. Between that, her speech, and her response to Jinbei, we can legitimately wonder about its nature. Could Imu have a connection with her? If so, it would make sense that she possesses the same regenerative ability as the Gorosei. The major difference with the Five Elders is that she doesn't possess a Devil Fruit linked to a Yokai, but the link with Imu could still exist. What is certain is that Buzzek's theory cannot be confirmed until we know Gunko's nature, or if her companions also possess this regenerative ability.
