Oscars: The Academy makes this historic decision

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently required participants to disclose the use of AI in the creation of their works. Since then, many have wondered about the future of films containing traces of AI in the eyes of the academy. But recently, it has just announced more decisive changes.

Participants can use AI in One condition

One of the major decisions announced by the Academy is that films created with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) will now be able to freely compete for the Oscars. In its new rules, the institution specifies that the use of digital tools, including generative AI, will neither favor nor penalize Oscar nominees.

There is one condition, however: humans must be involved in the creation of the film. In other words, a film will have to demonstrate a human artistic contribution, even if it uses advanced technologies.

Note that these rules were recommended by the Academy's Science and Technology Council. This council's role is to ensure that innovation remains within limits, without compromising the creative spirit that drives the industry.

In fact, in recent months, the use of AI in cinema has exploded. During the Oscars ceremony last March, several award-winning films had already used AI tools.

For example, Adrian Brody won Best Actor for his role in The Brutalist. However, the film used AI to perfect the actor's Hungarian accent.
Similarly, the award-winning musical film Emilia Perez used voice cloning technologies.

Between fascination and fear at towards AI

Thus, AI has quietly established itself in film production. But its use raises serious concerns. Indeed, since the rise of generative technologies, many artists have expressed their reluctance. During the Hollywood strikes in 2023, for example, actors and screenwriters firmly denounced the risk of losing their jobs to machines.

If you can take my face, my voice, and my body to make me say or do something without my consent, that's not acceptable.

Screenwriters also fear that tools like ChatGPT will replace humans in key tasks: research, processing ideas, writing scripts.
For them, AI must remain a support, not a replacement. For her part, Scarlett Johansson warned of the risks of abuse concerning the exploitation of artists' images and voices.

Furthermore, AI is still far from equaling humans in certain artistic fields.

It's like having a bad writer to help you. AI can set a framework, but not deliver a work with emotional weight.

In the process, the Academy has also tightened its voting rules.
From now on, members will have to have seen all the nominated films in a category to be able to vote in the final round. This measure aims to strengthen the integrity of the selection process and ensure that each work is judged fairly.
