How? Already an article on the PS6? While the PS5 has still not delivered its full potential and the PS5 Pro has been available for only a few weeks? As surprising as it may be, yes, because a console generation is not prepared at the last minute. Manufacturers like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo prepare their new machine directly after the release of their last console.
So, for the PS6, it has been since 2020, already five years, that Sony and the company's engineers have been thinking about and starting to work on the "next PlayStation console". And since September 2024, the first information, rumors and statements are slowly starting to come out, allowing us to start writing this file, which will aim to list all the information, statements, announcements and other (reliable) rumors that we will be able to read and discover in the coming weeks and years, until the release of the beast.
Because yes, even if the PS5 has not yet said its last word, it will (already) be 5 years since the Sony console was present on the market. And like all previous consoles, we have already had the right to the Slim models (since 2023), then to the Pro model, like the PS4 since last year. If all goes well, this new PS6 should arrive at the end of 2027. So, yes, there are already things to say.
NB: This file is a common thread. The goal of this type of file is to be regularly updated over the weeks, months, and years, allowing you to get a complete summary of the most reliable information about the PS6. Therefore, the file will be incomplete when it is initially published and will aim to be completed until the console is revealed and released.
A little history
The history of PlayStation began 30 years ago, in 1994 with the release of the first PlayStation. Since then, we have had five generations, all of which have been hugely successful.
- 1994, PlayStation, 6-year life cycle, 102.4 million consoles sold (top 6 best-selling consoles in history).
- 2000, PlayStation 2, 6-year life cycle, 160 million consoles sold (top 1 best-selling consoles in history).
- 2006, PlayStation 3, 7-year life cycle, 87.4 million consoles sold (top 8 best-selling consoles in history).
- 2013, PlayStation 4, 7-year life cycle, 117.2 million consoles sold (top 5 best-selling consoles in history).
- 2020, PlayStation 5, 5-year life cycle (to date). 75 million consoles sold (to date, making it the top 13 best-selling consoles in history).
In 2005 and 2012, Sony tried its hand at portable consoles with the PSP, which sold 80 million units, and the PSVITA, which sold 15 million copies.

PS6: any official statements from Sony?
To date (February 17, 2025), PlayStation has only mentioned the next PlayStation once. It was on the occasion of the brand's 30th anniversary in December 2024, when Hideaki Nishino, PlayStation CEO, confirmed that the console would arrive "at the right time." Sony did not want to rush the release of its new console or delay it to make room for the PS5 Pro.
For PlayStation, launch timing is very important, and as with previous generations, Sony intends to release its PS6 at the best time, both for players and developers.
PS6: the first information from insiders and journalists?
Last updated: April 16, 2025
According to insider KeplerL2, who was the first to reveal the official specs of the PS5 Pro, many months before its official announcement last year, Sony is preparing two PS6 models for the next generation along with a portable console. The goal would be to offer players a hybrid solution. This PS6 Portable would therefore be less powerful, halfway between an Xbox Series S and a PS5, allowing PS5 games to be played with a reduced experience. For the moment, the insider specifies that it is difficult to determine the exact power of the console since the latter would use a new GPU architecture. The insider is, however, adamant that Sony is preparing two PS6 models for the next generation.
The first time the PS6 was talked about, through rumors and insider information, was in September 2024, shortly after the reveal of the PS5 Pro. It was via a Reuters report that we learned that Sony and AMD were in discussions to renew their partnership with the PS6, allowing them to keep the same architecture and make the console backward compatible.
In January 2025, insider KeplerL2, who distinguished himself in 2024 by being the first to officially share the specifications of the PS5 Pro, confirmed on the NeoGaf forums that the PS6 was "fully designed and in the pre-silicon validation phase". This step means that the development of the machine is in its final phase and that the engineers are carrying out the last tests in order to validate the theoretical performance of a chip to give the green light and launch the physical production of the first prototype of the PS6.
Also according to the insider KeplerL2, this phase occurs on average two years before the release of the console, thus suggesting that the PS6 was planned for the end of year holidays 2027.
PS6: a backwards compatible console?
According to information from Reuters, in September 2024, the renewed partnership between Sony and AMD will allow future PS6s to be equipped with a backwards compatible AMD chip. Unfortunately, it is not yet known whether this backward compatibility will only be with PS5 games or whether it will extend to PS4 games and perhaps even PS1, PS2, and PS3 games (although this is very unlikely).
PS6: a portable console?
According to information from insider KeplerL2, Sony is preparing a portable alternative for its next PS6. For the moment, it is still quite difficult to know if the Japanese manufacturer is preparing two versions of its PS6, with a standard model and a portable version. Or if the console will be a hybrid machine similar to the Switch 2. However, insider KeplerL2, who is usually very well informed about PlayStation's plans, confirms that a portable version is indeed in the pipeline.
PS6: release date?
According to information from insider KeplerL2 in January 2025, the PS6 entered "pre-silicon validation phase" at the end of 2024. This stage generally occurs two years before the console's release. So, the PS6 is expected to be released by the end of 2027.
PS6: what price?
For the moment, no information on this subject.
PS6: what power?
While for the moment we have absolutely no information regarding the power of the PS6, the insider KeplerL2, who had unveiled the official specs of the PS5 Pro several months before its official announcement, indicated that a portable version of the PS6 would be in development alongside the main console. According to initial reports, this PS6 Portable could have a power similar to the Steam Deck and would be halfway between an Xbox Series S and a current PS5. The insider specifies that it is difficult to determine precisely the power of the machine at the moment since the latter would have a new GPU architecture.
