Despite the media, public, and critical whirlwind surrounding Snow White, Disney intends to continue offering live-action adaptations of its classics. Among the ten planned, one of the most anticipated is Tangled. Disney is reportedly currently looking for a lead actress and has even started discussions with a famous singer.
Disney: a mixed result for live-action
Playing with nostalgia has always worked, and Disney knows it better than anyone. The live-action adaptations of the company's great classics have, for the most part, met with great success. We are thinking in particular of Alice in Wonderland (2010), which still grossed over a billion dollars. However, there are several that have been monumental flops. One of the most recent is obviously Snow White.
The latest Disney's Snow White has had a difficult birth. Snow White is marked by controversy, particularly those surrounding Rachel Zegler, its lead actress. The film's difficult situation is obviously reflected in the box office, but also in online ratings. The feature film notably broke a shameful record by becoming the lowest-rated live-action film in history on IMDB. This is a huge blow for Disney, but it will take more than that to discourage them. The company will continue to produce live-action films, and next on the list is Tangled.
A successful singer is approaching by Disney for the role of Rapunzel
Announced since 2020, the live-action Tangled is still in production. Apparently, Disney seems to want to speed up the pace by currently looking for an actress for the title role. While Florence Pugh was expected to play Rapunzel, the studio has probably changed its mind. According to insider MyTimeToShineHello, Disney has reportedly started talks with Sabrina Carpenter, the famous singer.
By hiring Sabrina Carpenter, Disney wouldn't be taking any risks. The singer is extremely popular, is a house actress, looks like the character, and has already dressed up as Rapunzel. We could even see it as a response to Wicked. Indeed, Jon Chu's film has Ariana Grande in the cast. Seeing Sabrina Carpenter in Tangled would therefore not be illogical, as Disney probably wants to ride the wave of the success of Wicked by hiring a pop star there too.
