As the global economy goes through a turbulent period, Sony is once again raising its prices. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is becoming more expensive in several countries, including France.
A significant price increase for the PS5 Digital Edition
European and British players now have to pay more to acquire a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. In Europe, its price increases from 449.99 to 499.99 euros. In the United Kingdom, it climbs to 429.99 pounds compared to 389.99 previously. A comparable increase is applied in Australia (+15%) and New Zealand (+11.7%). Sony justifies these increases by a "difficult economic environment," citing inflation and unpredictable exchange rates.
This is not the first time that the Japanese giant has implemented such a strategy. In August 2022, the prices of the PS5 had already been increased, for similar pretexts. The digital version (Digital Edition) then went from 399.99 to 449.99 euros. Since its release, the price of the console has therefore increased of 100€, an increase of more than 25%. The standard version of the PS5, with Blu-ray player, is not increasing in Europe (549.99€), just like the PS5 Pro which remains at 800€.
A price drop for the disc player
To make the pill easier to swallow, the Japanese company is reducing the price of its disc player from 119.99 to 79.99€ everywhere in Europe. This brings the total bill to 580€ if you have a PS5 digital edition and decide to buy the player later. That's 10€ more than the old price for the whole thing.
As of this writing, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition (also known as the Slim model) is still €449 at various retailers. If you were thinking about If you're looking to get one, now might be a good time before the price increase takes effect everywhere.
