The first trailer for the 27th edition of South Park, the most famous of irreverent cartoons, has just dropped — and if this short clip is anything to go by, we can expect a particularly cheesy season!
Fans of the series already know that creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are used to building their episodes around several controversies, trends, or strong current topics that they connect in ways that are as creative as they are unexpected, in order to create a plot that is certainly absurd but ultimately more relevant than it seems.
The least we can say is that current events are full of the type of raw material that the two friends love. With Donald Trump's re-election and Elon Musk's antics alone, we could have expected Parker and Stone to have a field day—and that seems to be confirmed in this first trailer.
Franco-American relations in the background
From the very first sequence, we see a scene where ships piloted by deliciously caricatured French people are tearing the Statue of Liberty off its pedestal. This is likely a reflection of the strained relations between the two governments since Donald Trump's re-election. More specifically, this sequence may be inspired by comments recently made by Raphaël Glucksmann. In March, the latter suggested that Uncle Sam should return the Statue of Liberty to France, arguing that the United States no longer embodied the ideals represented by the monument.
Elon Musk and the Doge on the front line
We also witness numerous collisions between planes, under the catastrophic gaze of poor Butters who exclaims "We're all going to be fired!" This is likely a reaction to the multiple air disasters that have occurred in the United States in the space of a few months, including the tragic collision between a helicopter and a jet that killed 67 people. More broadly, these scenes seem intended to illustrate the relative regulatory chaos that has reigned in the administration since Donald Trump's return to power. The latter has multiplied layoffs and budget cuts in sensitive sectors, notably relying on Elon Musk, who inherited the position of head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
And as expected, the latter has not been spared by the series' creators either. The trailer ends with a particularly explicit sentence from the incorrigible Randy, who casually announces to his wife his intention to "take ketamine and wreak havoc in the government." This is obviously a direct reference to the SpaceX bigwig, who has often been singled out for his drug use and his role in major reforms of the American administration.
Broadcast starting this summer
There is also an appearance by rapper P-Diddy, who seems to be chasing the young protagonists of the series to an unknown planet. Have they arrived aboard SpaceX's Starship? You'll have to follow the series to find out. What is almost certain, however, is that Parker and Stone will probably not hold back from slipping in a few references tinged with particularly dark humor to the sordid accusations against the rapper, suspected of being at the center of a vast sex trafficking organization.
Suffice to say that this 27th season already looks like a great vintage. So we'll see you at the release of the first episode, which will be broadcast on July 9th on Comedy Central and probably on Paramount+ shortly after.
