During the Star Wars Celebration held in Tokyo, Japan, Disney made numerous announcements about the famous intergalactic franchise. Among them, a future independent film from the Skywalker saga: Starfighter. Led by Ryan Gosling, the first information about its plot has just been shared.
Ryan Gosling arrives in the Star Wars universe
During the Star Wars Celebration 2025 held in Tokyo, Disney attempted to bring some order to the many Star Wars projects that were on the table. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and creative director Dave Filoni confirmed several films, including a production that will feature Ryan Gosling in front of Shawn Levy's camera, who directed Deadpool & Wolverine. Star Wars: Starfighter and which will be "not a prequel, nor a sequel" but "a new adventure". Indeed, Starfighter will be a film independent of the Skywalker saga.
Its title refers to the ships used during battles in the Star Wars universe. When the film was announced, Shawn Levy did not give much information about its plot. The only thing we have learned is that Star Wars: Starfighter will take place five years after the events of Episode 9, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and that Ryan Gosling will play the main character in this new adventure.
The first elements of the Starfighter plot are revealed
However, we can count on Daniel Richtman, an always well-informed insider, to have additional information on the story that Starfighter will offer. According to sources, Ryan Gosling will play a Jedi who is the uncle of a 15-year-old boy whom he teaches the secrets of the Force. He and his nephew go on a mission and both will be pursued by a villain. It's currently unclear whether the villains will be Force-bound and whether they are Sith or not. The insider adds that the young boy's mother will play a major role in the plot.
This story fits with rumors circulating about Jesse Plemons and Sarah Snook who were offered the roles of the villains and Greta Leecould play the boy's mother.
Filming is expected to begin this fall and Star Wars: Starfighter will be released in French theaters on May 26, 2027, almost a year to the day after The Mandalorian & Grogu.
