Artificial intelligence is capable of detecting from a person's speech whether they are at risk of developing Alzheimer's disease in the coming years. All you have to do is talk to it.
Artificial intelligence is a fantastic diagnostic tool. Thanks to it, we are developing more and more non-invasive methods to accurately detect certain diseases. This one just needs you to stick out your tongue, for example, even through a camera. Another looks at your eye and assesses your cardiac health. In addition to this ease of use, the advantage of AI is its predictive capacity.
It is indeed capable of saying whether you could develop a particular problem in the future, with an accuracy rate sometimes approaching 100%. This figure has not yet been reached with the system in question here, but the initial feedback is still very encouraging. A team from Boston University has developed an AI model specialized in detecting Alzheimer's disease through patients' speech.
Just speak and this AI will tell you if you are at risk of developing Alzheimer's.
The AI's training is based on transcriptions of the speech of 166 adults with mild cognitive impairment. Often, this precedes the onset of Alzheimer's, which is what happened to some patients in the sample. The researchers were therefore able to ask the AI which of the 166 people would develop the disease in the next 6 years and compare. The system guessed correctly with an accuracy rate of 78.5%.

For a first attempt, this is already an excellent result. Especially since it is not necessary to play a quality audio extract. In the long term, we can imagine that recording yourself with your smartphone, or even speaking during a teleconsultation, will be enough to obtain a diagnosis. Although there is currently no cure for Alzheimer's, treating the disease as early as possible can slow its progression and harmful effects.
