Nvidia reveals a little more about the graphics processor that powers the Nintendo Switch 2 console. This information allows us to deduce the device's real capabilities.

Thanks to Nvidia, we know that the Nintendo Switch 2 is as powerful as this console

Now that it has been officially presented, the Switch 2 will be regularly talked about until its release on June 5, 2025, which is normal. Those who are most impatient can already watch our hands-on preview of the console. In the meantime, details about its components are coming out. On paper, there's no comparison: the Switch 2's spec sheet is strictly superior to that of the Switch 1, in every way.

However, it's worth noting that its graphics processor doesn't have a name, as with its predecessor. It's still Nvidia that's in charge, and indeed, the manufacturer talks about it in a blog post. For example, it confirms that the Switch 2 can display 4K resolution in TV mode, and up to 120 frames per second in 1080p in portable mode. DLSS is also supported. But that's not what interests us most here.

The Switch 2 is as powerful as this console if we believe Nvidia

Unsurprisingly, Nvidia is careful not to name the Switch 2's graphics processor, instead referring to it as a "custom" chip. However, the company does reveal a figure that gives us a very concrete idea of its capabilities. According to it, the graphics performance of the Switch 2 is 10 times higher than that of the Switch 1. So, a quick multiplication is all it takes to deduce that the Switch 2 has a power of 3.9 TFLOPS once docked (10 times the approximately 390 GFLOPS of the original Switch).

This therefore means that the Switch 2 is as powerful as an Xbox Series S, the Microsoft console released in 2020. While the comparison is telling, it doesn't mean much in practice. Those who buy a Nintendo console know very well that it will never compete with its competitors in terms of raw performance. What is sought above all is the gaming experience, here the hybrid side, and possibly console-exclusive games.
