Thought Chromecast was dead? This case brings it back to life

The recent difficulties encountered by older generation Chromecasts have served as a reminder that Google has decided to discontinue this range. After more than ten years of success, the discontinuation of Chromecast with Google TV has definitively signaled the end of the HDMI dongle in favor of a more traditional box. The Google TV Streamer, despite its undeniable qualities, is not a replacement for the Chromecast spirit, and direct successors are ultimately quite rare. However, one manufacturer has decided to try its luck by launching a device with a compact design and easy installation, faithful to the Chromecast approach.

Thomson revives Chromecast from its ashes

The Thomson Cast 150 comes in the form of a small box that plugs directly into the TV's HDMI port. The design is very reminiscent of the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and this is also true in its operation, thanks to the presence of Google TV. Google's interface centralizes all the popular streaming applications (Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube, etc.) and the small device has the famous Chromecast function which allows you to stream directly from your phone. Powered by a micro-USB cable, it focuses on simplicity and simply needs to be connected to Wi-Fi to start streaming in 4K.

Under the hood, the resemblance to the old Chromecast with Google TV is confirmed. The Cast 150 has a quad-core processor (Cortex A35) and an ARM Mali-G31 GPU, with 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage. Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos technologies are also included.

The big new feature compared to Google's solutions is the Cast 150's remote control. It includes a dedicated Live TV button for direct access to free channels and live TV, a feature that is still rare on this type of device. There are also shortcuts to the main streaming platforms, namely YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+.

A smart and affordable positioning?

With the Cast 150, Thomson is targeting a wide audience: both those nostalgic for Chromecast and newcomers to the world of streaming. The manufacturer also highlights the lightweight and compact aspect of its product, which becomes more easily transportable than a Google TV Streamer. Its price has not yet been officially announced, but everything suggests that it should be around 70 euros.

This price would make it a direct replacement for the old Chromecast 4K and would remain competitive with higher-end TV boxes. Thomson is expected to launch this accessory on the French market, especially since the brand already offers 140 (59.90 euros) and 145 (69.95 euros) streaming sticks on its website, as well as TV boxes like the Streaming Box Plus 270 at 129 euros. The Cast 150 was made official at the launch of the new Go range by the manufacturer, alongside the Go TV and Go Plus televisions. Thomson also presented its new Go Project Vega and Go Project Sirius video projectors during this event.
