Tomb Raider: Amazon Prime Live Action Series Reportedly Stalled, Close to Cancellation

There is less than a In May 2024, Amazon Prime Video confirmed the production of a live action Tomb Raider series. The first weeks and months seemed productive with several castings to find the new Lara Croft, who, according to early rumors, could have been played by Sophie Turner, who we saw in the Game of Thrones series in her role as Sansa Stark. Sadly, there may well be no Lara Croft at all. According to the latest information from the Daily Mail, the LIVE Action series project is in a bad way, at a standstill, and on the verge of being canceled altogether.

This series was supposed to be directed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. However, according to a recent interview with Jen Salke, the former head of Amazon MGM, Waller-Bridge has still not written a single line of script for the project by early 2025. Puck's report states: "Tomb Raider, on which Waller-Bridge worked and which Salke personally oversaw after announcing the launch of a series last May, has now gone through two writers' rooms and required tens of millions of dollars in development costs.

All this, and ultimately, is still at the starting point. In addition, on March 27, Jennifer Salke, who headed the Amazon MGM Studios branch, left her position. She was one of the people most invested and who were at the origin of this LIVE Action series project. Her departure may have played a big role in the balance and the decision to cancel the project.

As for Tomb Raider games, the new opus was announced in April 2022. Produced by Crystal Dynamics, the game will be developed in partnership with Amazon Games. The game was already scheduled to have a big presentation in 2023, and yet, we are still waiting for concrete information.

For the moment, the only things we know are that the game will be developed under Unreal Engine 5, that it should be the starting point of a whole new trilogy and that the latter should offer "complex puzzles to solve" and a "great variety of enemies to face and defeat".
