The foundry TSMC, the world's leading player in this market, has just announced the arrival of its new 1.4 nm, or 14 angstrom engraving process for 2028. The first step below 2 nm for the semiconductor industry giant, this engraving node, called A14, should particularly benefit technologies related to artificial intelligence, an industry particularly keen on performance and efficiency. energy.

Increased performance, lower consumption

Compared to its 2nm (N2) etching process, which will enter mass production this year, TSMC promises – as usual – improved performance, reduced consumption, and increased transistor density. Specifically, the foundry's A14 etching process would reduce consumption by 30% at the same frequency, or improve performance by 15% for the same consumption. The number of transistors would increase by 20% at similar surface.

TSMC is not disclosing the names of the first customers interested in this new engraving node, but Apple should undoubtedly be among them. The technology giant is indeed one of the foundry's major partners, with strong ties and very large order volumes. Samsung, for its part, having announced that it would abandon its 1.4 nm engraving process, preferring to focus on the manufacture of 1 nm engraved chips by 2029, TSMC's dominant position in this market should not really leave the brand with a choice. Apple for its next processors.
