It's official: Universal will indeed open a theme park in Europe and more specifically in the United Kingdom, less than 3 hours from Paris. At the time of this announcement, we only had a glimpse of the destination through concept art. Thanks to a source at the BBC, we know which franchises will be put to honor.
Universal Studios, future competitor to Disneyland Paris in Europe
After the United States, China, and Japan, it's Europe's turn to welcome the next Universal Studios theme park. After negotiations with the British government, it's official: Universal will offer a destination in Bredford, north of London. The park is thinking big, as the company has spent billions of pounds on its project. The goal is to raise 50 billion pounds by 2055 and attract 8.5 million visitors in the first year alone. This will provide the country with the opportunity to create 20,000 jobs once construction begins, which is expected to begin in 2026 if planning permission is granted, and 8,000 more once it opens over the next ten years.
When announcing the opening of Universal Studios in A few kilometers from the British capital, we were only treated to concept art. But thanks to information from the BBC, we know which franchises will be featured in this destination, which is likely to compete with Disneyland Paris.
All the franchises planned for Universal Studios Great Britain
Even though Universal Destinations stated on its website that it was too early to announce the attractions that will be offered in the park, the BBC states that themed areas and attractions inspired by Back to the Future, Jurassic Park and the Minions will indeed see the light of day since the contracts have been signed and that things are unlikely to change.
Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien will be delighted to learn that an area dedicated to The Lord of the Rings is planned.
And then, as the United Kingdom requires, the British Universal Studios park will honor two national heroes, namely James Bond and Paddington Bear. Agent 007 is expected to be the subject of a stunt show like The Bourne Stuntacular in the Florida park.
On the other hand, no Harry Potter attraction will see the light of day when the park opens because no agreement has been reached with Warner, which holds the rights to the franchise. But things could change in the coming years.
Finally, Universal is already thinking about the future since expansions should see the light of day with areas dedicated to Super Mario as well as the world of Wicked.
Universal Studios Great Britain is scheduled to open in 2031.
