What if Mace Windu, the Jedi Master played by Samuel L. Jackson in the prequels, finally made his return in Star Wars? The idea has made its way into the minds of several franchise executives, including Dave Filoni, Lucasfilm's chief creative officer.
At Disney, and especially with Star Wars, nothing is ever set in stone. For several years now, many characters from George Lucas's universe have made an unexpected return to the small/big screen. We're obviously thinking of Ian McDiarmid, who played Emperor Palpatine one last time in Star Wars IX: The Rise of Skywalker. Or Ewan McGregor in the Obi-Wan series or Hayden Christensen in Ahsoka. The actor who played Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader is also due to return to the camera in the second season of Ahsoka, alongside Rosario Dawson.
This list also includes Temuera Morrison, who, nearly 20 years after Attack of the Clones, donned Boba Fett's armor again in The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+. As you can see, anything is possible with the big-eared company. And with this avalanche of comebacks, some are calling for... body and soul to return to a galaxy far, far away.
This is particularly the case for Samuel L. Jackson, who regularly reminds us how much he is dying to play Jedi Master Mace Windu again. However, his case is a little more complicated... For good reason, the character officially died after trying to stop Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith. Despite everything, a golden rule has remained for several years at Marvel and Star Wars: no body, no death.
The return of Mace Windu? Star Wars executives are already discussing it
In a recent interview, the American actor explains that he has started testing the waters with Bryce Dallas Howard. The American actress/producer/director has notably signed episodes of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Skeleton Crew. She is therefore in contact with the masterminds of the franchise, including Dave Filoni, creative director at LucasFilm.
In an interview for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Bryce Dallas Howard claims to have discussed with Dave Filoni about a possible Mace Windu return: “I went straight to him and said, 'So, let's talk about Mace Windu and where he is. Can we just talk about that? Because he's dead? Really?”.Unfortunately, the actress was careful not to share Dave Filoni's reaction, but in itself, we don't see why Disney would close the door to this idea.
The character is still extremely popular with fans, and in recent years he has had his own adventures in the comics Star Wars: Mace Windu (2017). A second volume was also released in 2024 and took place just before the rise of the Separatists and the start of the Clone Wars. Disney could very well adapt these comics into a TV series for its platform. A perfect opportunity to bring Samuel L. Jackson back as one of the most powerful Jedi in the universe, just 20 years after Revenge of the Sith.
