With the release of Windows 11 in 2021, many users were disappointed by the change to the essential Start menu, which has certainly become more elegant but also less flexible in terms of customization. If this is you, you will probably be pleased to learn that Microsoft is preparing an update that should finally fill some of these gaps.
This information, relayed by The Verge, initially comes from a Bluesky user called phantomofearth. While exploring a beta version of the operating system, he noticed that the good old Start menu had undergone a substantial transformation.
More space, less friction
First exciting observation: the famous "Recommended" section, which takes up a lot of space while being almost useless for many users, can finally be disabled. A real blessing for users who juggle many applications and feel narrow with the current version.
Another welcome change: in the version tested by phantomofearth, all programs are now grouped together in a global menu that can be customized at will, including a drop-down menu that allows them to be sorted easily. A new icon also appears in the upper right corner of the menu. This is apparently a new interface for the Phone Link feature, which allows you to directly access your smartphone from Windows.
Unfortunately, another often-requested feature is still conspicuous by its absence. Many users often complain that Windows 11 no longer allows you to move the taskbar and the Start menu to the right or left of the desktop, and unfortunately, it seems that Microsoft has no plans to fix this regression in the near future.
The deployment date for this new version of the Start menu remains unknown at this time; it will probably be a few weeks or even months before it arrives on consumer versions of the operating system.
