A new feature is being tested on Instagram: the ability to limit access to a Reel by requiring a secret code. We already have a good idea of what this will look like. what it will look like.

Imagine you want to watch a video on Instagram. Nothing could be simpler, just tap on the Reel you're interested in and that's it. Now imagine that when you do this, you see a message asking you to enter a secret code. Intriguing, right? And even more so when you notice that there's a clue to help you find it.

This is what Meta is testing on its social network. Mark Zuckerberg's group doesn't hide it, no pun intended, since we can see what it looks like on the Design account, managed by these care.

Instagram is testing the publication of Reels protected by a secret code

In the screenshot below, you can see what happens when you click on the link that is apparently used for testing, without being logged into your Instagram account. Once this is done, the social network opens on a page with an “Enter secret code“ button. Just above is the clue used to find it, in this case the first hashtag in the caption, or “threads”. Tapping it reveals nothing more, except the message “Coming soon” (coming soon).

Several uses are possible for these Secret Reels and we imagine that this will be especially useful for brands and other content creators. For example, to tease the arrival of a new product, offer exclusive content to fans who know the creator very well (and are therefore more likely to find the key), create original contests with a series of riddles, etc.

Nothing is stopping you from using the feature without being famous, of course. But since the clue is a priori visible to everyone who sees your post, you may not want just anyone to be able to potentially access the video. At this stage, it is unknown when, or even if, Instagram will launch this new feature.
