US President Donald Trump announces how much import taxes on solar panels from certain regions of the world could increase. The figure is staggering.
The tariff war continues. Since his first election and his return to the White House on January 20, American President Donald Trump has wanted to restore the trade balance between the United States and its foreign partners. A fight that is now taking the form of a sometimes very significant increase in customs tariffs for many countries importing their products to the USA. China, for example, has been hit hard, with a rate of 145%.
And while consumers are wondering if they will still be able to afford a smartphone or a computer soon, a new front is opening up regarding solar panels. During Joe Biden's presidency, several solar equipment manufacturers have asked administration to protect their operations. One of the avenues considered was to target the main exporting countries to the United States: Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand. So acted upon.
Solar panels would see their customs tariffs explode in certain countries
Local companies are affected in the same way as those belonging to China, but relocated to Southeast Asia. The rate varies greatly from one company to another. In the worst case, the export of solar panels to the United States would be coupled with customs duties of 3,521%. It is in Cambodia that the unfortunate chosen ones are found. Other OEMs would face rates ranging from 41 to 375%.

This is currently a plan proposed by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Another U.S. agency, the International Trade Commission, will have to make a final decision on the new tariffs in June 2025.
