After Resident Evil, is this other cult Capcom franchise getting a remake? There's hope!

Ready for the guessing game: What franchise would one of Capcom's most famous personalities like to bring back with a remake? It's an extremely well-known Capcom franchise, adored by millions of fans, known for being brutal and even sometimes dabbling in a certain form of horror. I'm not Resident Evil, which has already had enough remakes as it is, but a franchise a little less popular than the latter, and many fans have been asking for my return for a while. I had a few episodes, but I've been missing for years.
And no, there are no dinosaurs, I'm not Dino Crisis.
The main protagonist of my various games generally fights with a sword, but it's not Onimusha, he's going to get his own remake, it's been announced. You got it, right? We're obviously talking about Devil May Cry.

A remake of Devil May Cry after Resident Evil? The creator of the game is hot!

Dante and his friends are making headlines again at the moment. Failing to offer us a Devil May Cry 6, eagerly awaited by an army of fans, the creator of the franchise has expressed his desire to do something else: a remake! After all, Resident Evil has proven that remakes can be excellent. In the case of Devil May Cry, it would literally bring the franchise back from the dead. If DMC 5 is already a long time ago, the first episode of the series is even further away. We have to go back to 2001 on PS2 to find Dante's first steps on PlayStation. Yes, for more than 20 years now, the demon hunter has been relentlessly tracking down infernal creatures with incredible class. Technology and standards have evolved greatly since then.

During a podcast, this is what the legendary Hideki Kamiya explains, one of the fathers of Devil May Cry who also worked on a whole bunch of games at Capcom including Resident Evil and Okami, but also at Platinum Game since we owe him the Bayonetta franchise. When a fan asks him if he would be up for bringing back the license in the form of a remake, the developer answers bluntly that he would love to do it. He explains that he has never touched the game since its release 24 years ago, but claims to regularly feel nostalgic and watch some gameplay. For him, if there is a remake, he would have to start from scratch. Kamiya explains that Devil May Cry has a rather particular structure that no longer really fits with what is possible today and that he would love to start from scratch. A direction that Capcom also adopted with the remakes of Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 ultimately.

For the moment, there is nothing in the pipeline, but there is hope

As for the direction the game might take, it remains a mystery. While the man says he's really interested in the idea of making a remake, he specifies that nothing is on the table and therefore, he hasn't really thought about what he would do exactly. Devil May Cry is definitely a license that's missing in the current landscape. The recent success of the animated series on Netflix proves that there is an audience, an expectation from fans and even certainly some new curious people. But for now, nothing has been done. For its part, Capcom seems to be busy elsewhere. A remake of Onimusha is in development as well as a new Resident Evil which is believed to be Resident Evil 9. Not to mention the support of current games like Street Fighter 6 and Monster Hunter Wilds and of course the development of Pragmata which is believed to be lost in limbo.

As for Kamiya, he is also very busy with his new studio Clovers. He is currently working on Okami 2 for Capcom. The man had also stated that his studio could work on new IPs as well as existing licenses, the Okami revival is proof of this. The door therefore remains open for Devil May Cray.
