Google is rolling out a discreet first beta that changes the appearance of Android devices. Several interface elements are evolving, including the home screen of Pixel smartphones.
During the Google I/O 2025 conference, artificial intelligence was at the center of all the announcements. But nothing was said about Android 16, which is scheduled for release in June. Google finally launched the first beta of Android 16 QPR1, an update that will arrive shortly after the stable version. Compatible with Pixel 6 and newer models, this update gives a glimpse of the future Pixel Drop, expected in the fall. This program generally brings new features specific to the brand's devices.
Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 incorporates the new lines of the Material 3 Expressive design, with an even more rounded interface and more readable menus. Notifications, multitasking, and quick settings are clearer. Tiles are more customizable, and the display is more flexible. But another new feature is particularly eye-catching: Google has quietly modified the Pixel Launcher, the default home screen of these smartphones.
Google reduces the size of the “At a glance” widget to free up space on the home screen
Discovered by Android Authority, the “At a glance” widget, present at the top of the Pixel home screen, has often been criticized for its large size and its lack of deactivation options. With Android 16 QPR1, Google finally offers a more compact version. This reduction frees up a full row on the screen, allowing you to add more icons or widgets. When rebooting after installing the beta, a message announces this new feature with an enthusiastic message, such as “Good news! Your home screen has a new layout.”
The change doesn’t just affect the main screen. The lock screen is also being reduced, likely to make room for the future lock widgets that Android 16 will soon support. While Google still doesn't allow you to remove it, this move represents a compromise between utility and customization. Other adjustments related to app organization, icons, and the overall screen layout are also in the works. The final version of this update is expected in fall 2025.
