Apple is preparing a shake-up in its iPhone range starting in 2026: new calendar, folding model...

2025 could well be the last year that Apple presents its new full lineup. According to The Information, which has several apparently well-informed sources within the manufacturer, the schedule could well be disrupted starting next year.

iPhone 17 Air: reduced battery life and production

But before getting there, the Apple company will obviously launch the 2025 vintage of new iPhones this fall. One of the new products this year would be the iPhone 17 Air, a very thin device (5.5 mm) that would have required quite a few sacrifices, the site indicates. A single camera on the back instead of two or three, a single speaker (there are two in current models), and above all, reduced battery life.

Only 60 to 70% of users could last a day without recharging with the iPhone 17 Air, compared to 80 to 90% on other models, according to internal figures. To compensate, Apple is reportedly developing an optional battery case... which would amount to significantly thickening the smartphone. In these conditions, why not get a "normal" iPhone?

Apple has launched such accessories in the past for its "normal" iPhones. The last of its kind dates back to 2021, giving the iPhone 12 and 13 a boost by attaching to them using MagSafe.

The launch of this model, as well as the three others expected this year (iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max), would therefore be scheduled for the start of the school year. It would weigh heavily on demand. The Asian assembly line would only devote 10% of its capacity to the Air version, while waiting to be truly informed about the level of orders.

Breaking the routine

The big maneuvers would begin in 2026. First with the launch in the fall of the first folding iPhone (iPhone 18 Fold?): it would have an 8-inch internal screen, and a 5.7-inch external screen. Apple is reportedly launching an iPhone 18 Pro, an 18 Pro Max, and an 18 Air in parallel.

Wait a minute, isn't there a model missing? According to The Information, the "standard" iPhone 18 has indeed been pushed back to spring 2027. Apple is reportedly looking to reorganize its smartphone launch schedule: high-end iPhones in the fall, and mainstream iPhones (perhaps the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e?) in the following spring.

The manufacturer is also testing Indian production capacity with these last two models, which are the least complex to assemble—and the least subject to customs duties, unlike China.

Finally, technically speaking, next year's iPhone 18 Pro would eliminate Dynamic Island: Face ID, the proximity and brightness sensors would move under the screen. There would be only a small hole for the camera. Finally, in 2027, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iPhone (!), Apple would like to offer a smartphone without any visible cutout, the camera also passing under the screen.
