Chrono Trigger Remake Could Finally Be a Reality, There Is Hope

There are games whose aura endures over time, to the point that some dream of their sublime return. Chrono Trigger is clearly one of them. Released in 1995 in Japan, then in North America, this RPG from Square took its time to reach Europe. It wasn't until 2009 and its Nintendo DS release that it was truly available. Since then, many would like to dive back into a reworked version of this legendary title. But with all the buzz from the past few weeks, we're not sure where to turn.

Chrono Trigger Remake, dream or reality?

Thirty years later, Chrono Trigger enjoys legendary status. Regularly cited as one of the best creations of its generation, it has now been released on just about every platform. PC, PlayStation, DS, and even mobile, it's a title that has become accessible to everyone despite an initial release that cut it off from a large segment of its audience. However, fans dream of its return, especially considering all the pretenses surrounding a potential remake.

That said, this "Chrono Trigger Remake" project has been making headlines again in recent days. The title's anniversary last March obviously has something to do with it. What's more, the rise of pixel game remakes in sumptuous HD-2D versions can only make you want to rediscover certain iconic titles. Square Enix is far from being the last in this area, as we can see with the remakes of the cult Dragon Quest games.

These could be the key to Chrono Trigger fans getting the remake they've been dreaming of. In fact, after the confusion of the last few days surrounding what some had taken as a teaser of the project before being denied, GameReactor was able to speak with Yūji Horii, one of the game's creators. Even if everything hasn't come to fruition, his confidences finally give hope:

Yes, I've wanted to do something for a long time. For the moment, Dragon Quest has benefited from the [HD-2D] remakes of III and I-II. I'm getting a lot of requests for the Chrono Trigger remake, so I'm starting to think about it.

Yūji Horii, for GameReactor.
