Disney+, launched in 2019 at a low price, has quickly become a key player in streaming. Its main competitors are Prime Video, Netflix, and Max, the youngest of the quartet. The four platforms share most of the market, far ahead of Apple TV or Paramount+. But the big-eared studios will soon take a big hit...
Disney+ caught up by this competitor
Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery announced their results for the first quarter of 2025. Disney+ gained 1.4 million subscribers and now has 126 million worldwide, while MAX gained 5.3 million subscribers and has 122.3 million worldwide. The two streaming platforms are now neck and neck, and it's only a matter of time before MAX overtakes Disney+. The trend is indeed towards a decrease in subscriptions for Disney+ (158 million in 2024) and an increase for Max (99 million in 2024). Their immense catalog, available in France since last year, appeals to HBO fans and newcomers alike. With MAX still to establish itself in major markets like the UK, Germany, and Italy, it should quickly garner several million additional subscribers.
Netflix still far ahead
The two platforms remain far behind Netflix, which has more than 300 million subscribers, and Prime Video, which has 230 million. However, the dazzling success of Max, introduced in the United States in 2023 after the merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery, proves the enthusiasm of viewers for their catalog, whose series are often described as masterpieces. With Netflix planning to significantly increase subscription prices, could they lose some of their subscribers to the competition, including Max? Max's standard plan costs €9.99 per month, compared to Netflix's €14.99 per month, a significant difference of five euros per month. It remains to be seen whether the gap between Max and the Red N will narrow further by the end of the year.
