What if Doom The Dark Ages became the new flagship of PC gaming? The game that brings your computer to its knees to offer the most advanced graphics possible? In any case, that's Nvidia's goal, which presents the result of its work through a comparative visual.

Doom The Dark Ages was developed with the iD Tech 8 Engine, to which Nvidia's technologies are added. The most emblematic is obviously path tracing. As a reminder, path tracing is an advanced version of ray tracing, which allows for a better simulation of the behavior of light. Thus, light rays bounce unlimitedly in space while taking into account the texture of surfaces. The consequence is the rendering of an extremely realistic image. To better understand the work done on The Dark Ages, Nvidia publishes a comparative photo with and without path tracing. Lights, shadows, reflections, the result is stunning.

Nvidia is counting on Doom The Dark Ages to showcase its technological advances

Of course, path tracing is an extremely resource-intensive technology. To improve performance, the game can rely on DLSS 4. In addition to upscaling, the game can generate up to three images between two frames, thanks to AI. Enough to triple the number of images per second. A new feature only available for the latest Nvidia cards, namely the RTX 50XX. Luckily, the game is free if you buy one of these cards.

As a reminder, Doom The Dark Ages is the third installment of the reboot that began in 2016. This time, we'll explore the origins of the DoomSlayer, since the story takes place before the first game. What's new? New environments, tougher enemies, but above all, a redesigned combat system that's more down-to-earth, responsive, and focused on shield use. Needless to say, this cocktail requires not only beautiful graphics, but also exemplary fluidity, hence the use of frame gen.

Doom The Dark Ages is well on its way to becoming the new benchmark for PC gaming, but let's point out that it's also coming to PS5 and Xbox Series. Available on May 15 (May 13 in early access).
