The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in theaters on July 23, and Marvel fans are even more eager to see the film after the success of Thunderbolts*. The public hopes that the studios' "rebirth" will continue with the reboot of this famous superhero team, whose nod to Avengers is already a good sign.
The Fantastic Four are coming to the MCU
Since Disney bought Fox and its catalog of Marvel superheroes, fans have been waiting for the arrival of the Fantastic Four and the X-Men in the MCU. In recent years, audiences have been introduced to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (spring 2022), featuring mutant variants, and Deadpool & Wolverine (summer 2024), in which Wade Wilson opposes the TVA with the help of Logan, but these are not yet the official new casts. As for the 4F, we got a brief glimpse of their spaceship in the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts*, directed by the Russo brothers. We therefore know for sure that the team of vigilantes is preparing to land on Earth-616 (the main continuity of the Marvel universe in which the other heroes evolve) after their solo adventures, scheduled for July 23rd in theaters... Including a nod to Avengers (2012) in the teaser, we hope for the best.
The Avengers, the first "family" of the MCU
The recipe for Avengers, the film by Joss Whedon released in 2012, is an energetic mix of XXL action scenes, punchlines, galactic threat (many years before Loki became a hero of the MCU), good humor, humor, and emotion. The 6 superheroes then form a small, united family, united in the face of adversity. Yes, they are superhuman characters, even when they don't have any powers, whether thanks to their fighting skills or their incredible intelligence, but they are also accessible. Complementary, they manage to work together to prevent New York from being wiped off the face of the Earth. After this gigantic battle, our vigilantes meet around a shawarma in a post-credits scene that has become cult, added after the preview. Black Widow, Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Hawkeye, completely exhausted after saving the world, share a sandwich, too tired to talk. While not a truly impressive sequence, it left a lasting impression on fans by capturing the characters' human, "normal" side.
The Fantastic Four teaser echoes the shawarma scene from Avengers
The Avengers is so successful because it humanizes its heroes, and this is a direction that Fantastic Four also takes with a simple moment of complicity between the characters shown in the trailer. Indeed, Ben Grimm can be seen cooking for his friends before sharing a meal with them as a family. Cooking for loved ones is a way for the 4F to establish intimacy, but also to connect with the audience. It's a simple moment, anchored in reality, in which we can all relate. If we go to superhero movies to witness enjoyable fights, it's the sequences in which the vigilantes perform everyday actions that make us appreciate them so much. As viewers, seeing a God, an assassin, and a Super Soldier share a good meal gives us a whole new perspective on them, and makes us closer to them. It's moments like the 4F's family dinner that will allow us to identify with the characters, and be more involved in their adventures - just like with the Avengers.
And you, what do you think of this type of intimate scene?
