FF7 Remake 3: its release date is back in the news, beware of disappointment

A year after Rebirth, many are now eagerly awaiting FF7 Remake 3 to see what Square Enix has planned for the grand finale to this revisitation of a true franchise landmark. In its latest financial report for the end of fiscal year 2025, the Japanese publisher unfortunately had plans that could disappoint their world, even if it's for a good cause.

FF7 Remake 3 wants to take its time for a truly fantastic finale

While we learned of the cancellation of an upcoming Kingdom Hearts game on mobile, and that the highly anticipated Kingdom Hearts 4 is finally expected to be released sometime in 2027-2028, Square Enix's latest financial report also reveals a new strategy for the publisher, which therefore also concerns FF7 Remake 3. In addition to a clear and assumed desire since last year to fully embrace multiplatform, despite declining game sales, it now wants to apply the maxim: "quality before quantity."

So, starting in fiscal year 2026 and as part of a new growth plan, there is talk of a "three-year reboot" to give developers the time they need to polish their next major titles. As a result, and despite numerous reports indicating that FF7 Remake 3 is progressing well thanks to the major work done on Rebirth, the grand finale of the trilogy is not expected to be released until fiscal year 2028 at the earliest.

Square Enix seems to not want to put too much pressure on developers and give them the time they need to deliver a memorable experience. We will therefore have to wait at least another three years for FF7 Remake 3 to arrive. Will it be a PlayStation exclusive, and potentially a PS6 exclusive, or a multi-platform title from the start? Time will tell. We know for sure that the script would already be completed, and that it would follow the open-world formula of Rebirth, but with much more colossal dimensions thanks to the presence of the Highwind. A long wait before its release therefore seemed unfortunately inevitable.
