For the first time in 16 years, James Cameron is abandoning Pandora.

A cinema film without compromise”. James Cameron will temporarily abandon science fiction to devote himself to a historical narrative. While Avatar: Fire and Ash is due to hit the big screen next December, the director is already working on a new film for theatrical release. Here, there's no question of immortalizing the natives of the planet Pandora; Cameron wants to tackle a historical period that continues to fascinate the film industry. He's taking on a book to be published on the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Written by Charles Pellegrino, Ghost of Hiroshima traces the life of a man who survived the attack on August 6, 1945, and took a train to Nagasaki a few days later, finding himself at the epicenter of another nuclear attack.

According to information from Deadline, James Cameron has acquired the adaptation rights to the upcoming book and plans to work on it as soon as the development of the Avatar series allows. At 70, the director has repeatedly mentioned the possibility of handing over the fourth and fifth installments, scheduled for 2029 and 2031 respectively. As a reminder, while 13 years separate the first and second films, Disney's acquisition of Fox has allowed the machine to be restarted and the pace to accelerate. But Cameron has no ambition to finish this saga, which has occupied him for several decades. With Ghost of Hiroshima, the director of Abyss and Terminator will abandon the Avatar universe for the first time since 2009.

“A unique and poignant experience”

Asked about the scope of this story, James Cameron returns to his origins. He explains that he has long had the ambition to tell this dark period of world history.

The director and the author of the novel are committed to “passing on his unique and poignant experience to future generations.”For now, James Cameron is not detailing the next stages of the project’s development. No actors are involved at the moment. The next step will be the publication of the novel as well as the release of the audio version of Ghost of Hiroshima. In France, the publication date is not yet known.
