This week, the government launched an offensive to ban social networks for children under 15. Former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal co-signed yesterday a opinion piece in Le Figaro with child psychiatrist Marcel Rufo. They warn of the risks that social networks pose to young people: "anxiety, depression or eating disorders." The health of young people is at risk, they say, calling for nothing less than a "state of emergency against screens."
Platforms accused of inaction
Second layer this Wednesday, with Clara Chappaz who, invited to the microphone of Franceinfo, affirmed that "protecting young people from the use [of social networks] is a political priority." For the Minister Delegate for Digital Affairs, "we must be very clear and ban social networks for children under the age of 15." This is a subject on which she is actively working, she assures, because "it is a major health issue for our young people." certainly, but which has been languishing in drawers for a year and the report of a commission of experts mandated by Emmanuel Macron. They were tasked with working on the relationship with screens among children and teenagers, and making proposals. Among them, the ban on social networks for those under 15.
Clara Chappaz wants to work at the European level to implement this ban. She also points the finger at the inaction of the platforms: "The hypocrisy is that the platforms know everything about our children. But they tell us they don't know their age. It's not possible. The action we are asking the platforms to take is to ask their users' age when creating their account," asserts the Minister Delegate. It remains to get everyone to agree.
