Gemini is coming to our cars in force: here's what's changing in Android Auto

Google isn't even waiting for its I/O 2025 event to unveil major new features, including one related to cars. The Mountain View giant, owner of Waze and Google Maps, is very interested in this topic, as is artificial intelligence, and the company has announced that Gemini will replace Google Assistant in Android Auto. With this decision, Google's AI will take its place as the new assistant on Google's automotive platforms (in the coming months). The benefit is clear: large language models like Gemini are far more capable than traditional voice assistants, offering personalized responses and a deeper understanding of queries. It is also Google's response to manufacturers exploring the integration of AI like ChatGPT in their vehicles.

A richer and more natural experience

The arrival of Gemini aims to make driving more efficient and enjoyable, while allowing the driver to keep their hands free. Historically, voice commands were at the heart of Android Auto and cars with Google Built-in (also called Android Automotive). Gemini modernizes this experience by enabling more natural conversations, which means the driver will no longer need to formulate their requests perfectly or touch complex buttons. They will thus be able to stay focused on the road.

When you press the steering wheel button or say "OK Google," Gemini will be the one listening. Google Assistant will remain as a secondary layer for very simple and local actions like setting a timer or an alarm.

What will Gemini be able to do in the car?

Gemini's capabilities in a car are multiple and go well beyond simple navigation or multimedia control. Google mentions:

  • Improved Search and Navigation: In addition to finding the best route, Gemini will be able to help you along the way. For example, it will be able to locate a charging station on the way to a post office that is also close to a park. Gemini will be able to search for a restaurant or the best places to visit nearby.
  • Message Interactions: By connecting to your messaging app, Gemini will be able to summarize received messages and even translate your response into another language before sending it.
  • Connection to Google Tools and Apps: Gemini will be connected to other Google tools and apps from the Play Store, facilitating requests to Google Maps, YouTube Music, and even Spotify. It will be able to understand complex requests, for example, looking up the address of a location in an email (such as the location of a soccer game for your son) and displaying it on Google Maps.
  • Companion Mode / Gemini Live: Google is imagining new uses, such as a companion mode for chatting with Gemini on long journeys. The AI will be able to imitate a human conversation to prevent you from falling asleep. You can also ask it to tell you the news (excluding certain topics like sports, for example) or a summary of a book on the way to a book club. Gemini Live is coming specifically to cars to enable this conversational interaction.
  • Translation: From its launch, Gemini for the car will be able to speak and write in 40 languages.

The rollout of these updates will be gradual in the coming months.

Even more Google in the car

Gemini will first be available on Android Auto, then in cars equipped with Google Built-in. Google cites a few vehicles that are affected, such as the Lincoln Nautilus, the Renault R5 and the Honda Passport. It's also expected on other cars running directly on Google's OS, such as the latest Volvos. The arrival of Gemini in Android Auto affects a considerable number of drivers, since Google estimates that more than 250 million cars on the road are compatible with its on-board system. In addition, more than 50 models natively integrate Google Automotive.

Finally, the integration of Gemini also comes with a greater openness of the Play Store for Android Auto, offering a wider catalog of compatible applications. Google mentions the arrival of new categories, including games and videos to help you while you're parked, charging your electric car, or waiting for your children.
